Dallas Christian vs Rice prediction: Rice's rebuilt roster gets a first look against Dallas Christian
The Owls' opener is less about the result than about whether five newcomers can fix last season's soft spots at the rim and on the defensive glass.
- Rice should control a home opener against a small-college visitor, so watch for how the new rotation shares minutes.
- Rice's defensive rebounding: last season it ranked 314th of 365 at securing the opponent's misses.
- No spread or total has been posted; Rice's adjusted net rating last season was -6.7, 241st nationally.
A low-stakes opener with questions
Rice opens the 2026-27 season at Tudor Fieldhouse on Monday, Nov. 2, against Dallas Christian, a small-college program outside Division I. The Owls should be heavy favourites. The real interest is in what Rob Lanier's roster looks like in his second season at Rice, after a 13-18 finish last year.
Last season ended 13-18 overall and 7-11 in the American. One preseason power ranking slots Rice 13th in the league, which frames how much rebuilding is still ahead.
What last season left behind
Last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) put Rice's offence 207th and its defence 264th of 365. Two weaknesses stand out. The Owls made just 47.6% of their twos, 337th nationally, and they ranked 314th in defensive rebound percentage.
There was a real strength, too. Rice grabbed 36.0% of its own misses, 37th in the country, and it took threes freely, ranking 90th in 3-point attempt rate. Free throws were a sore spot: the Owls shot 68.5% at the line, 312th. Against an overmatched opponent, an opener is a chance to see whether the new rotation finishes inside more cleanly.
Who is new, and who is unsettled
Rice announced five additions on June 2: Carmelo Adkins from USC Upstate, Jacob Dar from Seton Hall, Jarne Elouna Eyenga from Charlotte, plus Zalan Flasar and Tristan Vukotic. Freshmen Jaxson Thompson and Alexander Leeth are also on the roster. No starting lineup has been announced.
Senior guard Nick Anderson's status is unsettled, with conflicting information on whether he left through the portal or is committed to Rice. Nothing is known about injuries for either side.
Dallas Christian competes in the Association of Christian College Athletics. Emmanuel Bland was named head coach in the spring of 2023, though it hasn't been confirmed that he remains in charge.
