Cheyney (PA) vs Morgan State prediction: Morgan State starts life after Elijah Davis against Cheyney

The Bears open at Hill Field House with a reshaped backcourt and a non-Division I visitor they have beaten easily twice before.

Quick take
  • Morgan State should control a season opener at home, with the real interest in how its new guards handle Elijah Davis's old minutes.
  • Watch Morgan State's free throws. Last season the Bears ranked 30th of 365 in free throw rate and 362nd in opponent free throw rate.
  • No spread or total has been posted. Last season Morgan State played at 70.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 56th of 365.

Life after Elijah Davis

Morgan State's 2026-27 season begins Monday, Nov. 2, in Baltimore, and the first question is who runs the offense. All-MEAC guard Elijah Davis is gone, along with guards Rob Lawson and Walter Peggs Jr. Those three were central to a second-place MEAC finish that ended with a 75-70 overtime loss to Delaware State in the conference quarterfinals.

Kevin Broadus is back as head coach with a reshaped staff. Alfred Worrell Jr., Breon Barnett, David Bumpass, Trent Edwards, Manok Lual and Matar Wade return. Darian Grant, Trey Pettigrew (a John C. Smith transfer), Keith Richard (a junior college transfer), Khalil Horton and Oliver Spence arrive. With that much backcourt turnover, last season's 14-16 team is a loose guide to this one. An opener against a non-Division I opponent is a chance to sort out rotations.

Living at the line, both ways

Last season the Bears' clearest strength was getting to the foul line. Their free throw rate, free throw attempts per field goal attempt, was 41.8%, 30th in Division I. They converted 74.2% of those tries.

The flip side was the problem. Opponents drew fouls at a 50.0% rate, which ranked 362nd of 365. The Bears also struggled to score from the field: their effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 field goals, ranked 326th. Whether the new guards can create cleaner looks, and whether the defense can stop fouling, matters more for March than for this night.

A familiar, lopsided series

The programs have met before, and it hasn't been close. Morgan State won 100-52 in Baltimore in November 2023 and 124-57 in December 2024. Last season's Bears pushed the tempo, ranking 56th in pace at 70.5 possessions per 40 minutes.

Cheyney lists Jordan Bushrod as head coach, and its roster includes freshmen Gabriel Altemus and Emmanuel Carson. No injury, suspension or eligibility news has surfaced for either team, and the tip time remains a placeholder.
