Charlotte 49ers vs Indiana St Sycamores prediction: Wes Miller's Charlotte debut lands in a Hulman Center full of strangers

Both programs rebuilt nearly from scratch, so tonight's 4.5-point line rests on a handful of transfers and almost nothing either team did last season.

Quick take
  • Two rebuilt rosters feel each other out; Charlotte's edge rests on slightly more proven Division I scorers, not on anything last season showed.
  • Dorian Finister against Indiana State's new guard trio of Karmani Gregory, Maguire Mitchell and Meechie White is where a scoring edge should appear.
  • Charlotte is a 4.5-point road favorite, up from 3.5; last season's adjusted net ratings ranked 179th and 183rd.

Two rosters starting over

Nobody in Hulman Center tonight will be working from much of a scouting report. Indiana State's roster shows 0.0% of last season's minutes returning in the packet, though Matthew Graves said in late September that Martin Kaupanger is the lone returnee, and the Sycamores added nine transfers and five freshmen around the new group.

Charlotte is barely further along. Players on its roster logged just 9.0% of the 49ers' minutes last season, and Wes Miller, hired in March after Aaron Fearne was let go, coaches his first game.

That makes last season's numbers a weak guide, and they barely separate these programs anyway. Adjusted net efficiency (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Charlotte at -1.1, 179th of 365, and Indiana State at -1.5, 183rd. The lone recent meeting, a 92-76 Charlotte win in last season's opener, came with Graves on medical leave and two very different rosters on the floor.

Charlotte leans on Finister

The 49ers' most proven piece is Dorian Finister, who started every game at Louisiana last season and averaged 14.9 points. He shot 37% from three, which gives Miller a lead guard who can create and space the floor.

The one meaningful holdover is Arden Conyers, who made 53 threes at a 35.8% clip last season in about 20 minutes a night. His offensive rating (points produced per 100 possessions) of 118.8 was among the best on that team.

Dylan Grant arrives from Rutgers, where he started 30 games and scored 9.5 a game. His shooting is the question: he hit 30.6% from three last season. The 49ers also lost Anton Bonke to Michigan State, who averaged 8.3 rebounds a game last season.

A guard-heavy Sycamores rebuild

Indiana State built its new backcourt out of mid-major starters. Karmani Gregory scored 15.6 points a game at South Carolina Upstate, but needed volume to do it: he shot 32.8% from three.

Maguire Mitchell is the shooter. He made 83 threes at IU Indianapolis last season and scored 19 in the 81-59 exhibition win over Rose-Hulman on Oct. 24. Meechie White, an Eastern Illinois transfer, adds pressure on the ball after averaging 2.0 steals.

The early exhibition star was Jackson Cooper, who led that Rose-Hulman win with 22 points. He and Mitchell each reached double figures in both exhibitions.

Size is murky. The packet's minutes-weighted height has Charlotte at 78.9 inches against 74.6 for Indiana State, yet Graves calls his group "bigger, with more potential," and several of his newcomers bring no Division I minutes to measure.

Where the number sits

Charlotte opened at 3.5 in our feed and has moved to 4.5, a road favorite at -192 on the moneyline. With last season's ratings nearly level and both rosters new, that move reflects belief in Charlotte's incoming talent more than in any track record.

The total has held at 152.5. That looks high next to last season's tempo, when Charlotte ranked 339th in pace and Indiana State 250th. But two new coaching staffs or rotations can change a team's speed overnight, and neither team has played a game that counts.

What to watch

  • Finister's first half: whether Indiana State's guard rotation can keep him from taking over early.
  • Mitchell's volume: a high-attempt shooter is the Sycamores' clearest path to keeping pace with a 152.5 total.
  • Rotation clues: both coaches are still sorting minutes, and late substitution patterns may tell you more than the score.
