Charleston Southern Buccaneers vs South Florida Bulls prediction: Chris Mack's all-new USF debuts as a 19-point favorite over Charleston Southern
Both rosters were gutted over the summer, but South Florida rebuilt with high-usage transfers while Charleston Southern opens with almost nothing proven back.
| Spread | South Florida -21.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 158.5 |
- USF's deep transfer rotation should control the game; the real question is whether a fast, unfamiliar Charleston Southern group keeps the margin under 21.5.
- Sonny Wilson and Chris Davis Jr. against a Buccaneers group that lost its top four players from last season, including A'lahn Sumler and Brycen Blaine.
- USF is -21.5, up from -19.5 when our feed first saw it; Charleston Southern returns just 19.3% of last season's minutes.
Two rebuilds, one head start
Fifteen of South Florida's 16 players are new to the program, and the coach running them, Chris Mack, was hired in March after Bryan Hodgson left for Providence. Charleston Southern isn't much more familiar with itself. Tonight's 7 p.m. ET opener at the Yuengling Center pits two roster overhauls against each other, and the difference is what each side brought in.
USF returns only 13.4% of last season's minutes, but it restocked with proven scorers. Sonny Wilson averaged 16.9 points at Toledo last season. Garrett Johnson put up 11.4 at George Washington. Chris Davis Jr., the only player who followed Mack from the College of Charleston, scored 30 in the Oct. 19 exhibition, a 104-72 win over Saint Leo in which Mack used a 10-man rotation.
Charleston Southern returns 19.3% of its minutes and, as far as the packet shows, added no Division I transfers. Its leading scorer last season, A'lahn Sumler, took his 19.0 points a game to Pittsburgh. Brycen Blaine left for East Carolina. Last season's team numbers describe players who are mostly gone, so treat them as a sketch of Saah Nimley's preferences rather than a forecast.
What Nimley's style looked like
If the Buccaneers keep last season's identity, they will push. They ranked 6th in the country in pace last season (possessions per 40 minutes) and 8th in 3-point attempt rate, the share of shots taken from deep. That system produced 83.4 points a game, but it also gave up 80.1, 331st nationally.
The weak spot was possessions. Charleston Southern's forced turnover rate ranked 363rd of 365 teams last season, so it rarely took the ball away. Its free throw shooting, 64.7%, ranked 362nd. None of the players who drove those numbers are guaranteed to repeat them, but the returners don't suggest a fix: Lase Olalere, a 66.3% shooter around the rim, made 44.4% of his free throws last season.
For USF, a fast opponent means more possessions for a deeper team. Mack's rotation gives him fresh legs that a Charleston Southern roster with few known quantities may not match over 40 minutes.
Who's available for the Bulls
AJ Dancler, the Coastal Carolina transfer who hit 80 threes last season, will miss the entire 2026-27 season after knee surgery. Josh Omojafo, the lone returner, is eligible under the NCAA's new age-based rule; he posted a 128.6 offensive rating last season, an efficiency figure that reflects how few wasted possessions he used.
The open question is Andrej Shoshkikj. The Stony Brook transfer shot 45.1% from three last season but sat out the exhibition, as did Joshua Lewis. As of Oct. 19, Mack had not said whether either absence was injury-related, only that he was anxious to get "a couple kids" back. Nothing newer has surfaced on either player. No injury news has emerged for Charleston Southern.
Where the number sits
South Florida is favored by 21.5, and the line has moved from -19.5, where our feed first recorded it, to -21.5, a two-point move toward South Florida. The total is 158.5, up from 158. The moneyline has USF at -7000.
The market is leaning on the gap between programs. Last season's final adjusted ratings, which measure points per 100 possessions against the schedule played, had USF 42nd in net efficiency and Charleston Southern 228th. Both of those teams are largely gone. The Buccaneers were picked 7th in the Big South preseason poll, and they return home three days later to host Columbia International. For a spread this wide, the bet is really on whether USF's new pieces fit together quickly enough to keep scoring into the final minutes.
