Canisius Golden Griffins vs Penn State Nittany Lions prediction: Canisius's 24-turnover warning sign follows it into Happy Valley
Two gutted rosters open the season, and the Golden Griffins' new cast has already shown it can't hold onto the ball.
| Spread | Penn State -23.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 154.5 |
- Penn State's deeper, taller transfer haul should control a Canisius team that returns almost nothing, though the Nittany Lions' defense invites Canisius shooters to keep it closer.
- Canisius ball security against Penn State's hands: the Griffs gave it away 24 times in their final exhibition.
- Penn State is -22.5, up from -22. Last season's Nittany Lions allowed a 58.4% effective field goal rate, last in Division I.
Two rosters starting from scratch
Penn State finished last in the Big Ten in 2025-26 and was picked 18th in this year's preseason poll. Mike Rhoades, now in his fourth season with a 44-52 record, answered by rebuilding. Players on this roster accounted for only 26.4% of last season's minutes.
Canisius went further. Its current players logged just 0.2% of last season's minutes, so last season's 10-21 team tells you almost nothing about the group taking the floor tonight. Jim Christian, entering his third season, has a lineup of transfers from Cleveland State, East Texas A&M, UNC Greensboro, Bellarmine and UT Rio Grande Valley.
Penn State's availability picture has cleared in one spot and stayed cloudy in another. Josh Reed was ruled eligible on Oct. 28 after an eligibility question, and Rhoades called him "a go." Croatian forward Roko Prkačin is unsettled: Rhoades said Oct. 28 he was "very hopeful," one report since says the NCAA cleared him, and an Oct. 30 preview still had him awaiting a ruling. Penn State hasn't confirmed either way. Projected point guard Dasonte Bowen sat out the St. Bonaventure exhibition for an undisclosed reason, and the school hasn't said more.
Ball security decides the margin
The most telling number from Canisius's preseason is 24, the turnovers it committed in its exhibition loss at Robert Morris on Oct. 27. A new roster didn't cure an old habit. Last season's team turned it over on 19.7% of its possessions, which ranked 337th nationally.
Penn State's defense was poor at almost everything last season, but taking the ball away was the exception. It forced turnovers on 17.9% of opponent possessions, 125th in the country. If Canisius gives away possessions at its exhibition rate, the Nittany Lions get easy transition points and the spread stops being a question early. If the Griffs' guards protect the ball, they at least get to find out whether Penn State has fixed its half-court defense.
Can Penn State guard anyone yet
That defense is the reason a lopsided spread isn't automatic. Last season Penn State allowed an effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) of 58.4%, ranking 365th, dead last. Opponents made 38.8% of their threes, 363rd. Most of those defenders are gone, but the system and the coach remain.
Canisius brought in shooters to test it. Vinny Sigona hit 40.1% from three at East Texas A&M, and Clinton Efinda made 38.5% at UNC Greensboro. Michael Wilson Jr. already looks like the go-to scorer after putting up 30 at Robert Morris, with Efinda adding 15.
Penn State's answer inside is Buffalo transfer Tim Oboh, who blocked 1.4 shots per game last season. He fills an obvious hole: the Nittany Lions' block rate ranked 356th last season.
What the market expects
Penn State is a 22.5-point favorite with 10 books quoting, up from 22 when we first saw the line. The total sits at 152.5, down from 153. Those are small moves, but they lean toward a comfortable home win in a game that isn't a track meet.
Penn State showed how it might split minutes in a 68-57 exhibition win over Drexel. Without Prkačin, Rhoades played only 10 players, and Thomas Allard took a large share of the minutes across the exhibitions. A tight rotation on opening night can wear down late, which matters for a number this big.
The last time these programs played, in 2022-23, Penn State won 97-67.
