Campbell Fighting Camels vs NC State Wolfpack prediction: NC State's transfer haul opens the Gainey era against a rebuilt Campbell
Neither team looks much like last season, but NC State's imports arrive with proven shooting and size, and the 23.5-point spread prices in that gap.
| Spread | NC State -22.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 158.5 |
- NC State's experienced transfers should create separation early, with Campbell's entirely new roster still learning to play together under a new coach.
- Paul McNeil Jr.'s shooting against a Campbell perimeter defense with no returning minutes is the matchup to watch.
- NC State is -23.5 with a 158.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw it; NC State's adjusted offense ranked 20th last season.
Two programs starting over
Two first-year head coaches will be on the sidelines Monday night in Raleigh, and both rosters were built in the spring. Justin Gainey, hired in April, makes his head coaching debut at Lenovo Center. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra. Campbell also opens under a new coach. John Andrzejek left on April 1 to become associate head coach at Louisville.
The rebuilds are not equal. NC State brings back 28.1% of last season's minutes, and only three returning players. Up to 11 Wolfpack players could make their official debuts. Campbell returns 0.0% of last season's minutes. Every player who logged time for the Camels a year ago is gone, including DJ Smith, who averaged 19.0 points per game.
That makes last season's team numbers a weak guide. For what it's worth, NC State finished 34th of 365 in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), and Campbell finished 197th. The more useful comparison is the players each side added, and NC State's list is longer and more proven.
McNeil and the shooting question
Last season NC State was a shooting team. The Wolfpack made 38.8% of their threes, ninth in the country. The best shooter from that group is back. Paul McNeil Jr. hit 42.7% of his threes on 246 attempts, and the preseason All-ACC voters still left him off their teams.
Gainey surrounded him with more shooters. Christian Hammond made 39.3% from deep at Santa Clara, and Eemeli Yalaho hit 39.8% at Washington State. Hofstra transfer Preston Edmead combined volume and accuracy, averaging 16.1 points.
Campbell's best perimeter answer is Omaha transfer Lance Waddles, who started all 33 of his games last season and shot 38.2% from three. If the Camels are going to keep this within shouting distance, he likely has to carry the scoring. Sophomore Rashawn Inglemon, who averaged 16.7 points at Anderson last season, is the other name to know.
Size at the rim
NC State's frontcourt may be the clearest mismatch. Ven-Allen Lubin shot 66.8% from the field last season, and UC Irvine transfer Kyle Evans blocked 3.2 shots per game. The Wolfpack's minutes-weighted average height is 77.9 inches.
Campbell's known frontcourt option is South Carolina transfer Nordin Kapic, who played 10.8 minutes a game for the Gamecocks. Beyond him, the Camels are relying on newcomers, and no Campbell player on the roster has a track record of guarding a post scorer like Lubin. Second-chance points and paint scoring could decide how fast this gets away.
What the exhibitions showed
NC State's preseason gave a mixed but encouraging look. The Wolfpack edged Mississippi State 77-73, then routed Lenoir-Rhyne 130-66. Darius Adams led the exhibitions with 14 assists, and Edmead added eight.
Adams is the swing piece. He was a high-usage guard at Maryland but shot 24.6% from three there last season. If he is running the offense as a distributor rather than a shooter, that fits a roster loaded with catch-and-shoot threats.
Campbell played a close exhibition at South Carolina. The score could not be found, but hanging with an SEC team suggests the Camels are not arriving defenseless.
Where the number sits
NC State is favored by 23.5, with a total of 158.5. Ten books are quoting the game, and neither number has moved since our feed first recorded it on Nov. 1. The moneyline sits at -9500 for the Wolfpack.
The high total leans on NC State's offense, which ranked 20th in adjusted efficiency last season with McNeil and Lubin already in the lineup. The spread asks a question the market can't answer with data yet. Can a roster of strangers cover a margin this wide in its first official game?
