Biola vs San Diego prediction: Toneari Lane's jumper leads JR Blount's early San Diego test vs. Biola
A new coach inherits a guard group that could shoot and steal last season, and a defence that couldn't stop anyone near the basket.
- San Diego's guards should control this at home; the useful information is how Blount's defence handles the paint.
- Watch Toneari Lane, who shot 44% from three last season, and whether Blount builds the offence around him.
- No spread or total has been posted. Last season San Diego ranked 226th of 365 in adjusted net efficiency.
A new bench, familiar guards
JR Blount was hired March 10 after his time as an Iowa State assistant, replacing Steve Lavin. His first job is fixing a program that went 12-21 and 5-13 in the WCC last season. He inherits several guards who played real minutes.
Toneari Lane is the headliner. He shot 44% from three last season on 193 attempts and posted an offensive rating of 120.3. Adrian McIntyre and Juanse Gorosito each started 17 games, and forward Vuk Boskovic is also back. The roster page adds six transfers, including Dusty Stromer (Gonzaga/Grand Canyon), plus freshmen Chace Holley and Brannon Martinsen. No starting lineup has been confirmed.
The paint is the problem
Last season's San Diego defence collapsed inside. Opponents shot 57.7% on twos, which ranked 356th of 365. The Toreros also finished 329th in defensive rebound rate, the share of opponents' misses they grabbed.
Biola is moving into NCAA Division II, and we hold no data on it, so this game won't settle much. It will show whether Blount's system protects the rim and finishes possessions better than last season's team did.
What San Diego did well
The perimeter was a strength last season. San Diego shot 35.3% from three (100th) and held opponents to 32.0% from deep (74th). Its forced turnover rate, opponent turnovers per 100 possessions, ranked 68th. Against a lower-division opponent, pressure in the backcourt and good three-point shooting should be enough to open a gap.
