Bethune-Cookman Wildcats vs Furman Paladins prediction: Charles Johnston anchors Furman's rebuild against an all-new Bethune-Cookman
Two preseason conference favorites with almost nothing back from last season close an opening-night marathon, and the one constant in the building is Furman's double-double forward.
| Spread | Furman -5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 154 |
- Expect an unfamiliar, scrappy opener: Furman's transfers try to slow a quicker Bethune-Cookman and win the glass behind Johnston.
- Bethune-Cookman's foul-drawing attack against a Furman defense that kept opponents off the line last season.
- Furman is -4.5 after the feed first saw it at 4.0; the total slipped from 150.5 to 148.75.
Two favorites, two blank slates
Both teams start this season as the pick to win their league, and both got there by rebuilding almost from scratch. Furman was picked first in the SoCon with 10 first-place votes. Bethune-Cookman, the defending SWAC regular-season champion, was picked first in the SWAC with 181 points. They close the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon tonight on a neutral floor, the finale of an eight-game, 24-hour showcase.
The catch is how little of either team was here last year. Furman returns 29.5% of last season's minutes. Bethune-Cookman returns 24.3%, with a roster of transfers and recruits around a pair of forwards. That makes last season's team numbers a loose guide at best, so the players who are actually on the floor matter more than usual.
Johnston and the Furman glass
Charles Johnston is the rare piece of continuity. He started all 35 games last season and averaged 9.0 rebounds, the core of a Furman defense that ranked 50th nationally in defensive rebound percentage. Bethune-Cookman, by contrast, ranked 266th in that stat, so second chances could tilt this game toward the Paladins.
Johnston and Western Carolina transfer Marcus Kell were both named preseason all-conference. Kell scored 13.7 points a game for the Catamounts and posted a 116.8 offensive rating (points produced per 100 possessions). Furman also needs to replace Alex Wilkins, who left for Kentucky after averaging 17.8 points. Army transfer Jaxson Bell, a 35.9% shooter from three last season, is the likeliest candidate to absorb those shots.
Free throws and loose balls
Last season's Bethune-Cookman offense lived at the line. Its free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) ranked 37th in the country, while it took threes less often than all but a handful of teams. Furman's defense was built to stop exactly that: its opponent free throw rate ranked 44th.
The Paladins' weakness was the other half of the possession battle. They ranked 337th in forced turnover rate, so a Bethune-Cookman team that ranked 332nd in turnover rate last season may not get punished for its sloppiness. Transfer guard Jameel Morris, who averaged 2.1 steals at Alcorn State, gives the Wildcats a ball hawk on the other end.
Both teams also shot poorly at the line last season, which matters if this stays within one possession late.
A tempo tug-of-war
Last season's Bethune-Cookman played fast, ranking 58th in pace (possessions per 40 minutes). Furman was more deliberate at 240th, and its offense ran on efficient twos: the Paladins hit 60.6% inside the arc, 7th nationally. Whether this new Furman group shares that profile is an open question, but Kell, Bell and Boston College transfer Luka Toews all fired threes at their previous stops.
On availability, an injury report dated Oct. 30 listed no injuries for either team. Furman has not officially announced the status of guard Tom House, whose eligibility has been tied to a pending court case, and guards Cole Bowser and Mason Smith have no public update.
What the market is saying
Furman was first seen in our feed at 4.0 and is now -4.5 across eight books, with a moneyline of -199. That is a meaningful move for a game with no current-season data, and it lines up with last season's adjusted ratings (efficiency adjusted for opponents): Furman finished 180th in adjusted net efficiency, Bethune-Cookman 269th.
The total has drifted from 150.5 to 148.75, a small nod toward Furman's slower style winning the tempo battle. Neither team has a line on record yet this season.
