Ball State Cardinals vs Georgia Southern Eagles prediction: Ball State's transfer-built backcourt is favored at Georgia Southern's Homecoming

Both rosters were gutted over the summer, and the market is betting that Ball State's imported guards settle into a new system faster than Georgia Southern's rebuilt group.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:02 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Two nearly new rosters open the season; expect choppy early stretches and a game swung by whichever team's transfer guards find rhythm first.
  • K'Jei Parker, a 40.8% three-point shooter at UMass last season, is the most proven shot-maker on either roster.
  • Ball State is a 2.5-point road favorite, up from 2, despite finishing last season 294th in adjusted net efficiency.

Favored on someone else's floor

By last season's numbers, this line looks backward. Ball State finished 2025-26 ranked 294th of 365 in adjusted net efficiency (points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). Georgia Southern finished 233rd and, as a No. 10 seed, reached the Sun Belt title game. Even so, Ball State is laying 2.5 points in Statesboro tonight, and the spread has moved toward the Cardinals since our feed first logged it Sunday.

The explanation is simple: neither of last season's teams is suiting up. Both programs turned over almost their entire rotations, so last season's ratings say little about this one. The market is pricing the incoming talent, and it likes Ball State's haul better. Georgia Southern gets a Homecoming Week crowd for its opener, the Blue Bricks & Buckets night.

Capko's borrowed backcourt

Ball State fired Lewis after a run of losing seasons and hired SMU assistant Capko on March 20. Capko inherits almost nothing. Players on this roster logged just 16.6% of last season's Ball State minutes, and forward Mason Jones is the only returner who played a real role.

The new pieces are guards, and they come with résumés. K'Jei Parker made 40.8% of his threes at Massachusetts, mostly off the bench, and was efficient doing it. Zaon Collins ran Fresno State's offense with 4.6 assists a game and was a disruptive defender. Javion Guy-King hit 46 threes at Central Arkansas, and Sean Blake was a regular starter at Vermont.

One caution: the roster listings for Ball State don't agree, and the school hasn't named a starting five. How Capko splits minutes among four ball-handlers who were all featured players elsewhere is the first real question of his tenure. The Oct. 30 injury report lists no injuries for the Cardinals.

Georgia Southern's blank slate

Georgia Southern's reset is even deeper. Players on this roster account for 13.2% of last season's minutes. Gone are the players who carried last spring's run to the Sun Belt title game, where the Eagles lost 77-61 to Troy. Tyren Moore alone made 120 threes, and Spudd Webb and Alden Applewhite were the most efficient scorers on the team.

Charlie Henry is back on the bench, and he has rebuilt with transfers who were role players elsewhere. Josh Dixon used 27.7% of Milwaukee's possessions while he was on the floor, a high-volume scorer whose efficiency lagged. Truman Claytor IV hit 34.3% from three off Little Rock's bench. The name to know is Dallas Gardner, who was picked to the preseason All-Sun Belt second team. No injury news has surfaced for the Eagles.

Whose tempo sets the total

Last season these programs played at opposite speeds. Ball State ranked 355th in pace, one of the slowest teams in the country. Georgia Southern ranked 42nd and fired threes at the 23rd-highest rate in Division I. Henry's preference for speed should carry over, since the system stays even when the players change. Ball State crawled last season, and Capko's style is unknown.

The market expects points. The total opened in our feed at 156.5 and has climbed to 158, which suggests books expect Georgia Southern's tempo to win out, or two new defenses to look disorganized in an opener. If Ball State's veteran guards slow the game and work the clock, that number has room to come down in-game.

What to watch

  • Ball State's guard rotation: who starts among Collins, Blake, Parker and Guy-King, and whether Parker gets starter minutes.
  • Early pace: a fast first ten minutes favors Henry's system and the high total.
  • Gardner's role: the preseason all-conference pick is the player the Eagles are built around.
