Army Knights vs Duke Blue Devils prediction: Blackwell's Duke debut faces an Army team that lives on threes
A No. 2 Duke rebuilt around a Wisconsin transfer opens against a veteran Army roster that needs its jump shots to fall just to stay close to a 42.5-point line.
| Spread | Duke -44.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 157.5 |
- Duke's size and second chances should bury Army early; the real question is how long the starters play in a season opener.
- Army's three-point volume against Duke's perimeter defense, the one way the Black Knights can stretch out possessions and points.
- Duke is favored by 44.5, up from 42.5 when our feed first saw it, while the total rose from 150.25 to 157.5.
A rebuilt Duke opens at home
Duke went 35-3 last season and lost most of what made it go. Cameron Boozer and Isaiah Evans, its top two scorers, are gone, and only 43.2% of last season's minutes return. The Blue Devils still open as the No. 2 team in the country, and this game at Cameron Indoor (6:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU) is the first real look at Jon Scheyer's fifth roster.
The headliner is John Blackwell, who averaged 19.1 points at Wisconsin last season and shot 38.9% from three. Freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje was the story of the exhibition run, starting alongside Blackwell, Cayden Boozer, Dame Sarr and center Patrick Ngongba II. Duke's exhibition run included a 102-62 win over Belmont on Oct. 8 and a 103-64 win over Tennessee on Oct. 20. The open question is power forward, where nobody has claimed the spot next to Ngongba.
Army is the opposite: continuity without much talent. The Black Knights return four starters and 56.2% of last season's minutes under fourth-year coach Kevin Kuwik, but that roster went 11-21 and was picked last in the Patriot League preseason poll. Senior guard Ryan Curry is the centerpiece.
Army's only path runs outside
Army doesn't hide what it wants. Last season the Black Knights took 53.4% of their shots from three, the third-highest rate in Division I. They just didn't make many, hitting 32.4%. Duke held opponents to 30.6% from deep last season, 34th nationally, and the new backcourt is longer than the one Army will dress.
Inside, the picture is worse for Army. Its minutes-weighted height is 76.0 inches to Duke's 78.5, and last season the Black Knights blocked shots at a rate that ranked 360th of 365. Ngongba posted a 62.8% effective field goal percentage last season (a shooting mark that counts threes as 1.5 makes) and had three blocks and seven rebounds in 17 minutes against Belmont. Army's best counter may be 7-foot freshman Parker Henderson, an unknown at this level.
Extra possessions belong to Duke
Extra possessions belong to Duke Duke grabbed 38.4% of its own misses last season, sixth in the country. Defensive rebounding was the one thing Army did well, ranking 60th, but that came against Patriot League size, not a front line like Duke's.
The foul line offers Army no relief either. The Black Knights' free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 25.6%, which ranked 359th, and Duke's defense allowed the second-lowest rate in the nation. Army will have to score from the floor, mostly from three, with few cheap points to steady it.
Health and a 42.5-point number
Health and a 44.5-point number Two Duke rotation pieces carry questions. Caleb Foster debuted in the exhibition at Kansas on restricted minutes, and Scheyer called him ahead of schedule; Duke has said it is limiting his minutes as it ramps him up, and hasn't said what his workload will be today. Drew Scharnowski, the Belmont transfer, has a knee issue, and Scheyer said it would not be surprising if he missed the opener. No Army injuries have been reported.
The series history explains the price. This is the third straight season these teams have played: Duke won 100-58 at home in 2024 and 114-59 at Army last November. The spread has moved from -42.5 to -44.5, while the total climbed from 150.25 to 157.5. Duke cleared 100 in both exhibitions too, so the total may hinge less on Army's offense than on how deep into the second half Scheyer keeps his top unit on the floor in a season opener.
