Quick take
  • VCU's returning core and home floor should control the game early; the question is whether Little Rock's new guards can keep the margin manageable.
  • Aaron Clark running the point for Little Rock against a VCU backcourt that may still be missing Nyk Lewis.
  • VCU is favored by 19.25, down from 20.5 when our feed first saw it. Little Rock returns 2.2% of last season's minutes.

One returner and a new coach

Most season openers bring a few new faces. Little Rock brings almost an entirely new team. Players on the Trojans' roster played just 2.2% of last season's minutes, and forward Terrion Burgess is the only player back from a team that went 12-20. Travis Ford, in his first season, surrounded him with 14 newcomers, a group he called the largest recruiting class of his career.

That makes last season's Little Rock numbers close to useless. The program finished 298th in net efficiency, and Darrell Walker was fired March 6 after eight seasons. None of the players who produced those numbers are here, and neither is the coach.

VCU is the opposite case. The Rams went 28-8, won the A-10 regular season and tournament, and bring back players who logged 59.4% of last season's minutes. In his second season, Phil Martelli Jr. is building around continuity, not a reset.

What VCU brings back

Lazar Djokovic is the anchor. The forward averaged 13.2 points last season with an offensive rating of 125, an elite number for a player with his workload. Around him, VCU added a shooter it badly needed after Terrence Hill Jr., its 15.0-point scorer, left for Tennessee. Nyle Ralph-Beyer made 44% of 209 three-point attempts at Sacred Heart, and Middle Tennessee transfer Torey Alston adds rebounding and interior scoring.

VCU won last season by getting to the foul line. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 42.0% ranked 27th nationally. A Little Rock roster still learning to defend together could give up a lot of trips to the line if it reaches and gambles.

The Lewis question

Guard Nyk Lewis, a 35-game starter last season, was hurt in the NCAA tournament. In mid-October he described the injury as a Grade 3 ankle sprain plus a lower-leg fracture. VCU had no injuries listed as of Oct. 30, but the team hasn't publicly said whether Lewis plays tonight. If he sits, more of the backcourt falls to Ralph-Beyer, Brandon Jennings and Creighton transfer Blake Harper.

Little Rock's borrowed scorers

Ford didn't rebuild with projects. He brought in guards who carried big loads elsewhere. Ford said Aaron Clark, a scorer who averaged 15.2 points at Pepperdine with a 25.8% usage rate (the share of possessions a player finishes), will play point guard. He and UMBC transfer Jah'Likai King, who scored 14.0 a game there, are the team captains.

Bradyn Hubbard may be the most volume-heavy newcomer. He averaged 16.2 points at Abilene Christian on a usage rate of 31.8%, but his efficiency was modest. All three of these scorers took plenty of shots for teams that weren't good. Whether they can share the ball on a road floor in their first game together is the real unknown.

Where the number sits

VCU opened at -20.5 in our feed and has moved to -19.25, a small shift toward Little Rock. The total has barely moved, from 153.5 to 153.75. Last season's final ratings put VCU's adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) at 17.2, 47th nationally. Little Rock's was -14.3, 310th. Those numbers describe a Little Rock team that no longer exists, which helps explain why the line has drifted toward the Trojans.

VCU also has a bigger game ahead: a trip to Memphis on Nov. 7. How long the starters stay on the floor after the Rams build a lead matters for anyone holding a large spread.

What to watch - Whether Lewis is in uniform. - Clark's turnover count as a first-time point guard. - VCU's trips to the free throw line in the first half.
