Akron Zips vs Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns prediction: Akron's rebuilt champions open with Tahj Staveskie at the controls
The Zips return barely a quarter of last season's minutes, and a 5.5-point line says the market expects the gap to Louisiana to shrink.
| Spread | Akron -5.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 149 |
- Akron's new backcourt should push the pace against a Louisiana program that played slow last season, with both rosters largely untested together.
- Tahj Staveskie, a 17.3-points-per-game scorer at Incarnate Word last season, runs Akron's offense in his debut.
- Akron is a 5.5-point favorite, unchanged since our feed first saw it, a modest price for a team that returns 25.9% of its minutes.
A champion starting over
Akron went 29-6 last season and won the MAC tournament. Tonight's opener in the MAC-SBC Challenge at the Cajundome shows how little of that team remains. Players on this roster logged 25.9% of last season's minutes. Tavari Johnson, who averaged 19.7 points, is at Charleston, Eric Mahaffey is at Cincinnati, and Amani Lyles and Shammah Scott are gone too. Dustin Ford takes over in his first season as head coach.
That makes last season's offense a weak guide. Akron scored 123.6 points per 100 possessions, ninth nationally, but the players who produced it mostly left.
The new engine is Staveskie, who averaged 17.3 points at Incarnate Word last season and shot 37.3% from three. He used 26.5% of his team's possessions there, a lead-guard workload. Ty Pence arrives from Illinois State as the efficient complement, with a 59.2% effective field goal percentage last season (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times).
Mahaffey cleared, others banged up
The biggest returning piece nearly wasn't available. An Ohio Supreme Court order on Oct. 29 kept about two dozen players eligible by preserving an earlier October ruling, Evan Mahaffey among them. He started all 35 games last season, averaging 10.2 points with an offensive rating of 128.7. His one soft spot is the line, where he shot 57.4%.
The injury list is less settled. Ford said Max Burton, a Western Michigan transfer, has been sidelined six weeks with an ankle injury, Henderson is dealing with a lower-body injury, and Zach Halligan has a foot injury. "Halligan was more of a precaution," Ford said, adding that Halligan would be ready Monday. Burton has been out six weeks, and Henderson's lower-body injury leaves his status uncertain. Ford also said rotations will change game to game depending on matchups, so expect experimentation in the opener.
Louisiana resets in year two
Quannas White's first season ended 11-22, with an offense that ranked 347th in efficiency. The Cajuns return 29.6% of last season's minutes, so that number tells you about as little as Akron's does.
Jamyron Keller leads the returners, though he played only two games last season. De'Vion Lavergne, Todd Jones Jr. and Jeremiah Evans are also back. Lavergne carried a heavy load but shot 30.5% from three. The newcomers add scoring: Trent Middleton Jr. Dani Pounds scored 10.6 per game last season at Tennessee Tech in just 17.6 minutes.
The habit Louisiana must break is fouling. Its opponents' free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 45.8% last season, 357th of 365. A new rotation could fix that, or it could hand Akron easy points in the first game this group plays together.
Pace, the total and the price
Last season these programs played at opposite speeds. Akron averaged 71 possessions per 40 minutes, 39th nationally, while Louisiana sat 347th at 63.8. Ford's new roster and White's rebuilt one could both change that, but the total of 149 assumes a reasonably quick game. It moved up from 148.5 when our feed first saw it.
The spread hasn't budged from Akron by 5.5, and Louisiana is +190 on the moneyline. Last season's final adjusted ratings had Akron 61st and Louisiana 314th, a gap the market is plainly discounting given the turnover. This is the first meeting between the schools, and Louisiana is 3-3 in the challenge with the home crowd behind it.
