Air Force Falcons vs Wright St Raiders prediction: Air Force's all-returning roster tests Wright State's rebuilt champions
The Falcons bring back nearly every minute from a 3-29 season under a new coach, while the Horizon League favorite opens with a third of last year's minutes and the league's preseason player of the year.
| Spread | Wright State -12.75 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 163.25 |
- Wright State's transfers and frontcourt should control the paint, and Air Force's turnover habit decides how quickly the margin grows.
- Kellen Pickett against an Air Force interior that allowed 56.3% on twos last season, 342nd nationally.
- Wright State is -12.5, up from -9.5 when our feed first saw it. Air Force's 22.0% turnover rate ranked 358th last season.
Continuity against a reload
Season openers usually reward the team that knows itself. Tonight's opener at the Nutter Center tests that idea from both ends. Air Force returns 98.3% of last season's minutes, an almost unheard-of share, and says all five starters are back. The catch is what those minutes produced: a 3-29 finish, 0-20 in the Mountain West, and a net efficiency (points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions) that ranked last of 365.
The program also changed coaches. Joe Scott was suspended in January pending an investigation into his treatment of players and fired in February. Air Force hired Penn State assistant Joe Crispin in March. He inherits the same players and six freshmen, so last season's numbers describe this roster better than they usually would. His system could still change how they are used.
Wright State is the opposite case. The Raiders went 23-12, swept the Horizon League regular-season and tournament titles, and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Then most of that team left. Only 31.6% of last season's minutes return, and eleven Raiders will make their program debuts. The league still picked them first in the preseason poll, and they handled Bellarmine 76-54 in an October exhibition.
The giveaway problem
Air Force's surest path to a long night is the one it walked all last season. Its turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) was 22.0%, 358th in the country. Wright State's steal rate of 10.8% ranked 103rd last season, but the Raiders' best ball-hawk, TJ Burch, left for Utah, so that pressure has to come from new faces.
The glass offers Air Force no relief. The Falcons rebounded just 21.4% of their own misses last season, 362nd. When a team turns it over that often and rarely gets a second shot, it plays most of the night from behind.
Where Wright State scores
The Raiders' offense ranked 60th in efficiency last season, but much of that shooting walked out the door with Solomon Callaghan and Michael Cooper. The rebuilt version should lean inside. Pickett, the Horizon's preseason player of the year, posted a 59.1% effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) last season. Green Bay transfer C.J. O'Hara, a preseason first-team pick, scored 14.1 points a game there.
That is a bad draw for Air Force, whose defense allowed 37.6% from three (359th) and rarely protected the rim. Its block rate of 6.8% ranked 323rd. Dominic Pangonis, who hit 38.5% of his threes last season, gives Wright State a perimeter option if the Falcons collapse inside.
Air Force's scoring path
Kam Sanders, a sophomore chosen for Mountain West Media Days, carried a 26% usage rate last season and scored 12.5 points a game. Lucas Hobin launched 220 threes and made 31.8%. Both have to be better for the Falcons to hang around against a Wright State defense that ranked 148th last season.
The free-throw line has been no refuge for Air Force either. The Falcons shot 64.1% there last season, last in Division I. That matters most if a game this lopsided ever turns close late.
What the market says
Books first showed Wright State at -9.5 and the line has moved to -12.5, with the moneyline at -800. The total climbed from 157 to 163.5. That is an aggressive number for an Air Force team that averaged 61.5 points last season, though Wright State scored 80.5 per game. Neither team played fast last season, with Wright State at 68.5 possessions per 40 minutes and Air Force at 67. The only recent meeting, in November 2024, ended Wright State 70, Air Force 57.
- Air Force turnovers in the first 10 minutes
- Pickett's touches against Air Force's thin interior
- Whether Crispin speeds up a roster that ranked 214th in pace
