Oklahoma City Thunder vs Dallas Mavericks prediction: Short-handed Thunder bring an elite defense into Cooper Flagg's Dallas
Oklahoma City is unbeaten but missing much of its rotation, so its defense must slow a Mavericks offense that scores inside and gives the ball away too often.
| Spread | Oklahoma City Thunder -5.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 228 |
- Expect a grind. Oklahoma City's defense should keep it close to its standard, while a thinned roster leans hard on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for points.
- Watch the paint. Dallas's strong two-point shooting meets the league's best interior defense, and that defense is playing without Chet Holmgren.
- Thunder -6 with a total of 229, both unchanged since first seen. Dallas turns it over on 17.8% of possessions, 28th in the league.
How thin can Oklahoma City go
The Thunder are 4-0, and the roster arriving in Dallas barely resembles the one that opened the season. Jalen Williams (dislocated left ankle, fractured fibula) and Cason Wallace (torn left shoulder labrum) need surgery and are expected to miss several months. Chet Holmgren (right knee) sits for a second straight game. Alex Caruso sprained his right ankle Monday and is out, and Nikola Topić and Thomas Sorber remain sidelined.
Ajay Mitchell is questionable with an ankle sprain on Wednesday's report, and no update has come since. He carried Monday's win over Phoenix with a career-high 30 points. Without him, the load falls even more on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who averaged 31.1 points last season. Isaiah Hartenstein has taken a larger role with Holmgren out, and rookie Bennett Stirtz figures to see more minutes on a perimeter already thinned by the summer trades of Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe.
The offense was sputtering even before this wave of injuries. Oklahoma City ranks 23rd in effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 makes, at 50.7%. The defense has carried the team. It allows 98.1 points per 100 possessions, 2nd in the league.
Dallas lives inside the arc
Under new coach Dusty May, who won the 2026 national title at Michigan, the Mavericks have been efficient when they reach their spots. They convert 60.3% of their twos, 3rd in the NBA.
That runs straight into the league's stingiest interior defense. Opponents shoot 47.9% on twos against Oklahoma City, best in the league, and the Thunder lead the NBA in block rate. The catch is who built those numbers. Holmgren averaged 1.9 blocks last season, and he won't play. That makes Hartenstein's work against Daniel Gafford more important than usual. Gafford is filling a prominent role at center with Dereck Lively II out after foot surgery.
The paint is open at the other end too. Dallas allows 55.5 paint points a game, 27th of 30, which invites Gilgeous-Alexander to drive all night.
The turnover battle decides possessions
Ball security is the Mavericks' real weakness. They turn it over on 17.8% of their possessions, 28th in the league. Oklahoma City forces turnovers on 18.3% of opponent possessions, 4th, and a short-handed team needs those extra trips.
Cooper Flagg is the player who has to protect the ball and still create. He returned Monday from a one-game absence and played 40 minutes in the win at Miami. In that game he posted 29 points and tied his career high with 11 assists. He is not on Wednesday's injury report.
The rest of the Dallas list is crowded. Kyrie Irving is questionable for left knee management after playing 33 minutes Monday, and May said Irving is evaluated day to day rather than cleared for back-to-back appearances. Naji Marshall (illness) and Caleb Martin (thumb) are also questionable, and Sergio de Larrea is out. The statuses of Santi Aldama and Tarik Biberovic are unsettled.
Market and history
Oklahoma City is a 6-point favorite, and the total sits at 229. Neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game Wednesday morning.
The Thunder are 3-1 against the spread this season. Both teams have gone under in three of their four games, which fits a matchup built around Oklahoma City's defense and a Dallas offense that gives away possessions.
The Thunder won all three meetings last season. Both of those wins in Dallas came in low-scoring games, with the Mavericks held to 94 and 87 points.
