Miami Heat vs Atlanta Hawks prediction: Winless Heat bring Giannis and an open-three problem to Atlanta
Miami has rebuilt around Giannis Antetokounmpo, but a defense that lets opponents fire away from deep has the Heat 0-4 heading into a Hawks team that forces turnovers and scores in the paint.
| Spread | Atlanta Hawks -2 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 242 |
- Expect Atlanta to hunt threes against a Miami defense that allows plenty, while the Heat try to bully a soft Hawks interior.
- Giannis Antetokounmpo against an Atlanta front line that ranks 27th in block rate and is missing Mouhamed Gueye and Henri Veesaar.
- Hawks -3.5 has held steady while the total climbed from 239.5 to 242.0; Miami is 0-4 against the spread.
How Miami keeps losing
The Heat traded for a superstar and are still looking for their first win. Their four losses share a thread: opponents shoot over the top of them. Heat opponents take 48.1% of their shots from three, the third-highest share in the league, and make 39.0% of them, which ranks 27th of 30.
That explains a strange split. Miami allows just 40.0 points in the paint per game, 4th-fewest, yet gives up 121.8 points a night. The interior holds and the perimeter gives way.
The losses have also gotten closer and more painful. Miami fell 115-110 at Charlotte, then blew a fourth-quarter lead Monday in a 113-109 home loss to Dallas. Bam Adebayo has been answering questions about being labeled a scapegoat for the start.
A new Heat, still finding shots
This is not last season's team. Only 61.5% of last season's minutes return, and the headliner is new: Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points on 62.4% shooting in 36 games for the Bucks last season. Tyler Herro and Norman Powell are gone, and Powell's 21.7 points a game left with him.
Miami added shooting to space the floor for Giannis, including Tim Hardaway Jr., who hit 40.7% from three for Denver last season, and Bobby Portis, who hit 45.6% for Milwaukee. It hasn't shown up yet. The Heat are shooting 30.6% from three, 25th in the league, and their offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions) sits at 102.9, 26th.
That turnover also blunts last season's series, when Miami won three of four meetings, including a 128-97 rout in Atlanta. Different rosters played those games.
Where Atlanta can be hit
The Hawks have been good at a lot early: their net efficiency of 8.7 per 100 possessions ranks 7th, and they assist on 71.2% of their made baskets, the highest rate in the league. They also force turnovers on 20.1% of opponent possessions, 2nd in the NBA. Miami's ball security is a real strength, though, with a turnover rate of 13.7, 5th-best, so that edge may be muted.
The soft spot is the rim. Opponents are shooting 58.7% on twos against Atlanta, 25th, and the Hawks block just 6.9% of opponent two-point tries, 27th. That is the matchup Antetokounmpo was brought in to win.
Atlanta counters with its own paint scoring, 57.0 points a game, 2nd in the league, though Miami's interior defense has been the one part of its game that works.
Who's available
Atlanta's frontcourt is thin. Mouhamed Gueye is out after foot surgery, and Henri Veesaar tore his right ACL and is expected to miss the season. Jock Landale is available while playing through a nasal fracture, as he has for the past three games.
Aaron Wiggins is questionable with a left knee bruise. He has been Atlanta's best bench player so far, and Luguentz Dort is handling a significant reserve role in his first season with the Hawks.
For Miami, Simone Fontecchio is doubtful with an illness, and Pelle Larsson is probable with a right ankle sprain. Neither team is on a back-to-back; both played Monday.
What the market says
Atlanta is a 3.5-point favorite, the same number our feed first recorded, with the Hawks at -155 on the moneyline. The total has moved the other way, climbing from 239.5 to 242.0.
The early betting records point in opposite directions. Miami is 0-4 against the spread, failing to cover as a favorite three times, and three of its four games went under. Atlanta's games have gone over three times in four. First halves could set the tone: the Hawks score 63.5 first-half points a game, 4th in the league, and Miami allows 63.2, 26th.
