Houston Rockets vs Milwaukee Bucks prediction: Without Sengun, unbeaten Houston tests a rebuilt Bucks frontcourt in Milwaukee
The Rockets lay 8.5 points on the road with their hub center and his backup sidelined, against a Bucks roster still learning itself after the Giannis trade.
| Spread | Houston Rockets -8.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 226 |
- Houston has the shotmaking edge, but with Sengun out, Milwaukee's bigs get a real chance to win the paint and the glass.
- Clint Capela and Houston's patchwork center rotation against Myles Turner and Kel'el Ware, with the Rockets allowing 60.1% on twos, 27th in the league.
- Houston -8.5 and a 227.5 total haven't moved since our feed first saw them; the Rockets are 4-0 against the spread after going 27-41 last season.
Houston's middle goes missing
Houston hasn't lost yet, and it is off to its best start since 2014-15. Tonight it tries to stretch that to five straight without the player who runs its offense. Alperen Sengun was ruled out on the Oct. 27 injury report with low back soreness, and Houston hasn't given a timetable. Steven Adams is also out with a right soleus strain; Ime Udoka said Monday he could miss "a week or two."
That strips out more than size. Sengun averaged 20.4 points and 6.2 assists last season, and his big night Monday against Atlanta was the headline of the Rockets' fourth win. Clint Capela is likely to start at center, with two-way big Oscar Tshiebwe in line for minutes and Jabari Smith Jr. sliding up in small-ball looks. Tshiebwe averaged 6.6 rebounds in 16.6 minutes for Utah last season, so he can hold the glass in short bursts.
The worry for Houston sits at the rim. Even with Sengun available, opponents are making 60.1% of their twos (27th of 30) and scoring 53.5 paint points a game (24th). Houston's offensive rebound rate, the share of its own misses it grabs back, is 32.7%, 4th in the league. Milwaukee's defensive rebounding ranks 8th, so second chances will be harder to come by without Houston's two main centers. Marcus Smart, questionable with a left forearm strain after missing the last two games, would add a ballhandler but not size.
A Bucks roster still introducing itself
Milwaukee traded Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami and rebuilt around the return: Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis. Only 64.3% of last season's minutes are back, so last season's 32-50 team is a weak guide to this one.
The new pieces are starting to show up. Herro and Jaquez are in the starting lineup, and Herro led Monday's comeback over Indiana: Milwaukee trailed by 11 at halftime, then outscored the Pacers 60-41 after the break. That ended a run of three losses to open the season. Herro averaged 20.5 points for Miami last season, and Ryan Rollins gives the backcourt a second shooter after hitting 40.6% from three last season.
The frontcourt is where Milwaukee can press its advantage tonight. Turner blocked 1.6 shots a game last season and stretches the floor, while Ware pulled down 9.0 rebounds in 22.2 minutes for Miami. Against a Houston rotation without Sengun and Adams, those two should have the most room they will see all week.
Turnovers Milwaukee can't collect
Houston's one sloppy habit is giving the ball away: its turnover rate, turnovers per 100 possessions, is 16.8, 24th in the league. On most nights that is a vulnerability. Tonight it may not be, because Milwaukee forces turnovers at an 11.9% rate, dead last, and its steal rate also ranks 30th.
That matters for the shape of the game. Houston scores 20.8 fast-break points a game (4th), and a Bucks defense that rarely turns teams over leaves the Rockets to run mostly off misses. If Milwaukee can't manufacture empty Houston trips, it has to win on shotmaking and the glass, which is why the interior matchup carries so much weight.
Tempo, threes and the number
The two teams want different games. Milwaukee plays at 107.2 possessions a game, 7th fastest, while Houston sits 24th at 102.6. Both teams are 3-1 to the over, and the total of 227.5 hasn't budged.
The three-point line is the swing for Milwaukee. The Bucks take threes on 44.8% of their shots (10th), and Houston's opponents are making just 29.0% of theirs, 2nd best in the league. Over four games that figure is a small sample, and it is the number most likely to drift back toward normal; if it does tonight, Milwaukee's volume becomes a real problem for Houston.
The market makes Houston an 8.5-point favorite across 11 books, unchanged since our feed first recorded it. Houston has covered all four games this season, a sharp turn from a 27-41 mark against the spread last season. The Rockets also won both meetings last season, including 122-115 in Milwaukee, though the Bucks on the floor tonight look little like that team.
Key players
- Kevin Durant (Houston Rockets): Durant averaged 26.0 points and shot 41.3% from three last season, and he carries more of the load with Sengun out.
- Amen Thompson (Houston Rockets): Thompson averaged 18.3 points and 7.8 rebounds in 37.4 minutes last season, the kind of rebounding help Houston needs tonight.
- Jabari Smith Jr. (Houston Rockets): Smith averaged 15.8 points on 36.3% three-point shooting last season and has been seeing small-ball minutes up front.
- Alperen Sengun (Houston Rockets): Ruled out with back soreness, Sengun takes 20.4 points and 8.9 rebounds a game from last season off the floor.
- Tyler Herro (Milwaukee Bucks): Herro averaged 20.5 points for Miami last season and led Monday's second-half comeback against Indiana.
- Ryan Rollins (Milwaukee Bucks): Rollins averaged 17.3 points and 5.6 assists last season while hitting 40.6% from three.
- Myles Turner (Milwaukee Bucks): Turner blocked 1.6 shots a game last season and should have room to work against a Rockets frontcourt missing two centers.
- Kel'el Ware (Milwaukee Bucks): Ware averaged 9.0 rebounds in 22.2 minutes for Miami last season, a weapon on the glass in this matchup.
Numbers that matter
| Houston opponent 2-point % | 60.1% | 27th in the league even before Sengun and Adams went out, an opening for Turner and Ware. |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee forced turnover rate | 11.9% | Last in the league, which blunts Houston's 24th-ranked ball security. |
| Houston opponent 3-point % | 29.0% | 2nd best in the league and the figure most likely to drift against a Bucks team that shoots plenty of threes. |
| Milwaukee returning minutes | 64.3% | The Giannis trade rebuilt the roster, so last season's Bucks numbers say little about this team. |
| Spread | -8.5 | Houston's number hasn't moved since our feed first recorded it, with the Rockets 4-0 against the spread. |
