Wagner Seahawks vs Boston College Eagles prediction: Money Williams leads Boston College's all-transfer rebuild into Luke Murray's debut
Both rosters start from scratch tonight, but Boston College's newcomers were starters elsewhere while Wagner's mostly came off benches.
| Spread | Boston College -16.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 147.5 |
- Boston College's imported starters should control a Wagner roster rebuilt largely from former reserves, though two new teams make the first half unpredictable.
- Money Williams, who scored 20.6 points a game at Montana last season, faces a Wagner backcourt that lost Nick Jones, who averaged 14.9 points last season.
- Boston College is favored by 16.5 with a 147.5 total, both unmoved; last season both programs ranked near the bottom nationally in pace.
A roster of former starters
Luke Murray's first game as Boston College's head coach comes against the program where he was an assistant in 2010–11. He inherits almost nothing. Jack Bailey and Will Eggemeier are the only holdovers, and players on this roster accounted for 0% of last season's minutes.
What Murray brought in were players who carried mid-major offenses. Money Williams averaged 20.6 points at Montana last season with a 34.1% usage rate, meaning roughly a third of the Grizzlies' possessions ended in his hands while he played. Ernest Shelton scored 15.9 a night at Merrimack. Brandon Benjamin posted a double-double average at Fairfield, with 10.4 rebounds a game. Andrija Bukumirovic added 13.8 points at UT Martin.
That is four players who were the first or second option somewhere else. The question for a debut is how quickly they share one ball.
Wagner rebuilt from the bench
Wagner is starting over too, with 14 new players. Dwan McMillan, who took over on an interim basis after Donald Copeland's suspension, had the interim tag removed this offseason. The Northeast Conference coaches picked the Seahawks fifth in the nine-team league.
The losses were real. Nick Jones, who averaged 14.9 points a game last season, is now at New Orleans. The incoming transfers mostly played spot minutes last season, and none averaged more than Taj Bryant's 14.1 minutes at Sacred Heart. Cam Estevez is the shooter to know; he made 40.6% of his threes at Fairfield, though on just 32 attempts.
If McMillan's interim run says anything about his preferences, expect Wagner to slow things down. The Seahawks played at the 346th-fastest pace of 365 teams last season.
Fixing a broken jump shot
Last season's Boston College could not shoot. The Eagles made 29.4% of their threes, 358th nationally, and 65.3% of their free throws, 360th. That roster is gone, and the replacements fix both problems. Shelton shot 87.2% at the line at Merrimack, and Williams shot 85.5% at Montana.
The exception is Bukumirovic. He hit 36.4% from three but just 57.5% at the line, which makes him the player an opponent would rather foul late.
The frontcourt is thinner. Murray named size at the five as a weakness and said he is "comfortable with seven or eight" players in the rotation. Jacob Furphy, the former UConn player Murray recruited there, was reported around Nov. 2 to be out two to six weeks with a sprained MCL; Boston College hasn't confirmed it, and one injury listing shows no Eagles hurt. Luke Hunger is healthy and practicing, and freshman Žak Smrekar appears poised for a key role.
What the line is pricing
Boston College is a 16.5-point favorite across seven books, the same number our feed first recorded this morning. The total of 147.5 hasn't moved either.
That total asks for a quicker game than either program played last season, when Boston College ranked 339th in pace. With new coaches on both benches and almost no returning players, those tempo numbers are a loose guide at best. Last season's adjusted ratings, which had the Eagles 151st and Wagner 299th in net efficiency, describe rosters that no longer exist.
The spread rests instead on the gap in résumés: Boston College's top newcomers started and scored at their old schools, and Wagner's mostly did not.
