Chapman vs UC Irvine prediction: UC Irvine's suffocating defense gets a Division III warm-up against Chapman
The Anteaters built last season around the nation's stingiest interior defense, and the first real test of that identity comes later than this.
- Expect UC Irvine's defense to control the game early against a Division III SCIAC opponent it beat 82-52 in their last meeting.
- Watch the paint: Irvine held opponents to 42.2% on two-pointers last season, best of 365 Division I teams.
- No spread or total had been posted as of Oct. 21; Irvine played at 71.2 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 34th in Division I.
A defense built at the rim
Russell Turner, now in his 17th season, has made defense the Anteaters' calling card, and last season was an extreme version of it. UC Irvine went 23-12 and allowed 95.5 points per 100 possessions, second in Division I. The core of it was the interior: opponents shot 42.2% on two-pointers, the best mark in the country, and Irvine blocked 14.9% of opponents' two-point tries, 10th nationally.
Those are last season's numbers, and the roster has changed. Guard Jurian Dixon is now projected to start at Virginia, and there is no dated news on who replaces him. Even so, the Big West preseason poll picked Irvine to win the league, a sign the defensive identity is expected to carry over.
The offense is the open question
Irvine's scoring lagged well behind its defense last season. It scored 107.2 points per 100 possessions, 255th in Division I, and took threes on just 27.5% of its shots, 361st of 365. That is a team that plays inside out and pushed the pace last season, ranking 34th in possessions per 40 minutes.
A Division III opponent won't reveal much about whether the new pieces can shoot. Watch who takes the perimeter shots and how comfortable the guards look running the offense without Dixon.
A tune-up in a busy week
Chapman is a Division III program in the SCIAC, and Irvine has won all five meetings. The last one, on Nov. 4, 2024, at the Bren Events Center, ended 82-52. This game sits between an Oct. 27 date with Cal State LA and a Nov. 7 visit from San Jose State, so expect Turner to spread minutes and use the night to sort out his rotation.
