CSU Fullerton Titans vs San Diego St Aztecs prediction: Fullerton's breakneck pace runs into a rebuilt San Diego State
The Titans played faster than almost anyone last season, and the Aztecs open their first Pac-12 season with the shot-blocking to punish it, if their banged-up roster is ready.
| Spread | San Diego State -16 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 154.5 |
- Fullerton pushes the tempo; SDSU's rim protection and inside scoring should take over as the game settles.
- SDSU's interior offense against a Fullerton defense that ranked 340th in opponent two-point percentage last season.
- No line posted yet. Fullerton's 75.5 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 2nd nationally, will shape the total.
A season opener with questions
San Diego State starts its first season in the reconstituted Pac-12 with a roster Brian Dutcher called rebuilt and not quite up to speed as of Oct. 14. The opponent is a Fullerton team that plays fast enough to expose a group still learning each other.
Last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) frame the gap. SDSU finished with a net rating of 16.5, 51st in Division I. Fullerton sat at -1.6, 185th. With heavy roster churn in San Diego, treat those as a starting point, not a verdict. The last meeting, on Nov. 6, 2023, at Viejas Arena, went to the Aztecs 83-57.
Speed against a wall
Fullerton's identity is tempo. The Titans averaged 75.5 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 2nd of 365. SDSU played at a more measured 69.4, 92nd.
The trouble for a fast team is where those possessions end. SDSU's block rate was 15.2%, 9th nationally, and opponents made just 45.9% of their twos against the Aztecs, 18th. Opponents responded by shooting threes against them at one of the highest rates in the country. Fullerton will likely have to win from outside rather than at the rim.
Where the Aztecs should score
Fullerton's defense was most vulnerable inside. Opponents made 55.9% of their twos against the Titans last season, 340th of 365.
That suits an SDSU offense that rarely leaned on the three. The Aztecs' 3-point attempt rate was 33.2%, 316th, meaning they took fewer threes than most teams. They also carry real size: SDSU's minutes-weighted average height is 78.0 inches against Fullerton's 75.8. Expect the Aztecs to pound the paint and test whether 6-9 newcomer Rockwell Reynolds can hold up.
The turnover fight
Both defenses take the ball away. SDSU forced turnovers on 20.3% of possessions last season, 35th, and Fullerton was right behind at 19.9%, 43rd.
The difference is on the other end. Fullerton protected the ball well, ranking 75th in turnover rate at 15.3%. SDSU's turnover rate was 17.1%, 200th, and that was before a rebuild. If the Titans are going to stay close, live-ball turnovers that feed their transition game are the clearest path.
Who is healthy for SDSU
Availability is the biggest unknown. Guard Latrell Davis separated a shoulder about a month before Oct. 14, missed three weeks, returned, then missed another week after tweaking it. Croatian forward Luka Skoric has been out three weeks with a groin injury. Both were set to miss the Oct. 16 exhibition at Arizona, and Dutcher said he is erring on caution with the opener in mind. Neither has a status for Nov. 3 yet.
Guard Elzie Harrington had surgery on a lower-leg injury, and forward Miles Heide carries a wrist injury tag. No update on either has surfaced. Transfer Bear Cherry is coming off a season-ending injury suffered at Sacramento State last season, with no current status. The good news: the NCAA cleared all three European newcomers, Skoric included. Exhibitions against USC on Oct. 23 and Long Beach State on Oct. 28 should show who is ready.
Fullerton has no reported injuries. Dedrique Taylor, in charge since 2013-14, adds Reynolds and guard Drew McConnell. Bryce Cofield's status on the roster is unclear.
