North Florida Ospreys vs Cal Baptist Lancers prediction: Cal Baptist starts over under Kyle Getter as North Florida's Kent Jackson returns
The Lancers bring back almost none of an NCAA tournament roster, and the Ospreys' bombers test how much of last season's elite defense moved to Riverside with the new faces.
| Spread | California Baptist -8.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 155.5 |
- Expect a tug-of-war over tempo: North Florida wants a fast, three-heavy game, while Cal Baptist's identity last season was slow and physical.
- Kent Jackson against a Cal Baptist perimeter defense that returns almost nobody from a group that held opponents to 29.6% from three.
- Cal Baptist is favored by 8.5 with a 155.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw it, despite 13.5% returning minutes.
A champion rebuilt from scratch
Cal Baptist ended last season in the NCAA tournament, its first trip ever, after Dominique Daniels Jr. hit a go-ahead three in the final seconds of the WAC final. Almost everything about that team is gone. Daniels, who scored 23.1 points a game last season, has moved on. So has coach Rick Croy, now an associate head coach at Arizona State, and so has the WAC: the Lancers open their first Big West season with Kyle Getter, a longtime assistant who spent three seasons at Notre Dame, running his first program.
The roster churn is the real headline. Players on this season's roster logged just 13.5% of Cal Baptist's minutes last season. That matters because the program's 25-9 record was built on defense: last season's final adjusted defensive rating (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) ranked 50th in the country. With so few holdovers, treat that number as a description of a team that no longer exists. The only recent evidence is rough. The Lancers lost 100-53 at No. 22 UCLA on Oct. 21.
North Florida keeps its shooter
North Florida went 7-25 last season, but it has more continuity than its host. Its returners account for 42.9% of last season's minutes, and Bobby Kennen enters his second season, now as the full-time coach after the interim tag came off in the spring.
The centerpiece is junior guard Kent Jackson, one of the ASUN's leading returning scorers. He averaged 14.8 points last season and made 106 threes, and his free throw shooting (92.5%) makes him a closer if this stays tight late. Mason Lee is the efficient piece, with a 64.6% effective field goal percentage last season (a shooting mark that counts threes as 1.5 makes). Wagner transfer Eddie Placer adds another shooter.
The hole is the departure of Kamrin Oriol, who carried the offense at 20.9 points per game. The bigger worry is the other end. North Florida's adjusted defense finished last season 362nd of 365, and the Ospreys ranked last in block rate.
Pace and the three-point line
These programs played opposite styles last season. North Florida averaged 71.8 possessions per 40 minutes, 20th fastest in the country, while Cal Baptist ground along at 65.3, 295th. The Ospreys also lived behind the arc: their 3-point attempt rate (share of shots taken from three) ranked 9th nationally.
That ran directly into Cal Baptist's strength. Last season's Lancers held opponents to 29.6% from three, 5th in Division I, and allowed one of the lowest three-point attempt rates in the country. Whether Getter's rebuilt group can run that same perimeter defense in its first real game is the central question tonight. If it can't, Jackson and Placer get the kind of looks that make a 155.5 total reachable and an 8.5-point margin hard to cover.
The glass and the number
One last-season mismatch is worth watching even with new personnel. Cal Baptist grabbed 37.4% of its own misses, 15th in the nation, while North Florida's defensive rebounding ranked 362nd. The Lancers also shot poorly, ranking 324th in effective field goal percentage last season. If the new frontcourt, including 6-10 Charlotte transfer Nick Richart, keeps that habit, it is the cleanest path to a comfortable home win.
The market leans on the home floor and the program's pedigree. Cal Baptist sits at -8.5 across seven books, with a -430 moneyline, and neither the spread nor the 155.5 total has moved since our feed first recorded it Tuesday morning. Tip is 10 p.m. ET at the Fowler Events Center on ESPN+.
- Who guards Jackson, and whether he gets clean catches off movement.
- Early pace: a fast first ten minutes favors North Florida's style.
- Cal Baptist's offensive rebounding as a sign the old identity survived the rebuild.

Numbers that matter
| Cal Baptist returning minutes | 13.5% | Almost none of last season's NCAA tournament team returns, so its numbers from that run are a weak guide. |
|---|---|---|
| Cal Baptist opponent 3-point %, last season | 29.6% | Ranked 5th nationally and is the first thing North Florida's three-heavy offense will test. |
| North Florida 3-point attempt rate rank, last season | 9th | The Ospreys took more than half their shots from deep and should again with Jackson back. |
| North Florida adjusted defense rank, last season | 362nd | Near the bottom of Division I, the reason the market still favors a rebuilt home team. |
| Spread | -8.5 | Cal Baptist's number has not moved since our feed first recorded it. |
