Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions vs Arkansas Razorbacks prediction: Arkansas opens Calipari's rebuild against a UAPB roster starting over

Both programs turned over nearly everything, but Arkansas reloaded with size, scorers and six five-star freshmen, while UAPB opens with almost no returning minutes and no public exhibitions.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 3, 7:11 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Arkansas's new frontcourt should own the paint and the glass early; the open question is how long starters stay on the floor.
  • Cooper Bowser, who shot 76.6% at Furman last season, faces a UAPB defense that ranked 302nd in defensive rebound rate last season.
  • Arkansas -38.5 with a 163.5 total, both unchanged since our feed first saw them; each team ran a top-20 pace last season.

Two rosters, rebuilt from scratch

John Calipari's third Arkansas team returns just 15.7% of last season's minutes from a group that went 28-9 and won the SEC title before Arizona ended its run in the Sweet 16. Billy Richmond III is the only real contributor back. The rest is new: Jeremiah Wilkinson from Georgia, Cooper Bowser from Furman and a freshman class with six five-stars, led by preseason All-SEC second-teamer Jordan Smith Jr. and Miikka Muurinen, whom the NCAA cleared this fall. The Razorbacks debuted at No. 12 in the AP poll and beat Gonzaga and Memphis in exhibitions.

UAPB's reset is even deeper. Only 2.7% of last season's minutes are back, and the program's leading scorer, Quion Williams, is gone after averaging 17.7 points. Solomon Bozeman's sixth team was picked 11th in the SWAC and played no public exhibitions. The most familiar name is Jalen Tatum, a Pine Bluff native and preseason All-SWAC second-teamer who started six games at Jackson State last season. With turnover this heavy, last season's team numbers are a loose guide, especially for the Golden Lions.

Size and the glass

The clearest edge is inside. Bowser made 76.6% of his shots at Furman last season, nearly all of them at the rim, and kept it going in the exhibitions with 9.0 rebounds per game and four blocks. Muurinen, projected to start at power forward, averaged 10.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in those two games.

UAPB's defense struggled with exactly that last season. It ranked 302nd in defensive rebound rate, the share of opponent misses a team grabs, and 277th in opponent two-point percentage. It also fouled heavily: its opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 42.4%, 338th nationally. A new roster could change those habits, but the Golden Lions are unlikely to add size overnight, and an Arkansas team with a deep, tall rotation should get second chances and trips to the line.

Pace and a 163.5 total

Both programs liked to run last season. Arkansas played at 72 possessions per 40 minutes, 17th in the country, and UAPB was just behind at 71.8. Calipari's group turned that tempo into 90.2 points per game, second nationally, behind an adjusted offense (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) that finished sixth. UAPB's adjusted defense ranked 327th.

Those are last season's numbers for players who mostly aren't here, so the total rests on style more than personnel. The bigger swing factor is game shape. Spreads this wide usually mean the second half belongs to bench units, and how hard Arkansas's reserves push the pace once the outcome is settled will shape the scoring as much as the starters do.

Availability and the number

Smith left the Oct. 24 Gonzaga exhibition with a right leg injury and couldn't bear weight in the locker room, but he returned later in the half and appeared unlikely to miss time as of that night. No newer update has surfaced. Isaiah Sealy had offseason knee surgery, and his current status hasn't been reported. No injury news has emerged for UAPB.

The market hasn't moved: Arkansas -38.5 and 163.5 both held from the first posting across seven books. This is the first men's meeting between the schools, though Calipari has seen UAPB once, a 78-54 win while at Memphis in 2002. Tip is 7 p.m. Central on SEC Network+.
