Alabama St Hornets vs Texas A&M Aggies prediction: PJ Haggerty debuts a remade Texas A&M against an Alabama State reset
Both programs start nearly from zero, but the Aggies' new pieces arrive with far bigger resumes, and the question is whether the margin runs past four touchdowns.
| Spread | Texas A&M -27.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 162.5 |
- Expect A&M's transfer-heavy backcourt to shoot over the top early while Alabama State tries to survive on pace and steals.
- Haggerty against a Hornets defense that forced turnovers on 19.3% of possessions last season, 62nd nationally.
- Texas A&M -27.5 and a 162.5 total, both unmoved since Tuesday morning. Last season A&M's defense ranked 264th in efficiency.
Two rosters starting over
Texas A&M opens its season tonight at Reed Arena with almost none of the team that won an NCAA Tournament game in March. Players on this roster logged 14.1% of last season's Aggie minutes. Five players return and 11 are new.
Alabama State has turned over even more. Its current roster played 5.0% of last season's minutes, and Chris Wright coaches his first game after taking over in April. His predecessor, Tony Madlock, is permanently ineligible after an NCAA ruling in June on game manipulation at the school.
That makes last season's team numbers a loose guide. Still, the gap in talent coming in is wide. A&M ranked 44th in adjusted net efficiency last season (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), while the Hornets ranked 323rd. Alabama State was picked seventh of 12 in the SWAC preseason poll.
Haggerty and a shooting gallery
The new centerpiece is PJ Haggerty, who averaged 23.4 points at Kansas State last season and was named third-team All-SEC in the preseason. He scored 28 in the Oct. 25 exhibition loss to SMU. Jordan Pope, granted a fifth year by a court ruling in August, played in that game and added 15.
Bucky McMillan's first A&M team let it fly, taking 46.2% of its shots from three, 42nd-most in the country. The new group looks built to keep doing it. Pope shot 37.4% from deep at Texas, and Lukas Walls made 45.5% of his threes at Radford.
Alabama State's defense held opponents to 33.9% from three last season, which ranked 205th. The Aggies also look bigger up front, led by Mackenzie Mgbako, who is back after a broken foot limited him to seven games last season.
Where the Hornets can steal possessions
Alabama State's best path to a respectable margin runs through turnovers. Last season the Hornets forced them on 19.3% of opponent possessions, 62nd nationally. A&M has a brand-new backcourt, and opening nights tend to be loose.
The cost of that aggression showed at the line. Opponents earned 42.1 free throw attempts per 100 field goal attempts against the Hornets, 336th of 365. A&M's guards are built to cash those in: Tyshawn Archie shot 90% from the line at McNeese.
On offense, Alabama State's hope is Michael James, who scored 21.2 points per game at Mississippi Valley State and shot 90.4% on free throws. He will need help. The Hornets posted a 47.8% effective field goal percentage last season (threes count 1.5 times), 336th nationally, and his new running mate Amaree Brown shot 36.8% at Southern Indiana.
Pace and the 162.5 total
The market has not budged. Seven books hold Texas A&M at -27.5, and the total sits at 162.5, the same numbers first posted Tuesday morning.
The total leans on tempo. Alabama State played at 71.2 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 34th-fastest nationally, and A&M scored 86.1 points per game, 13th. The Aggies' defense was the soft spot, giving up 78.9 points a game, 314th.
That is the swing factor for both numbers. If the rebuilt A&M defense still concedes in transition, the Hornets can keep scoring even while losing big, which helps the over and hurts a four-touchdown cover. If the new, bigger lineup tightens things, the Aggies' shooting should carry the margin by itself.

Numbers that matter
| A&M returning minutes | 14.1% | Players on this roster logged only this share of last season's Aggie minutes, so last season's team numbers are a weak guide. |
|---|---|---|
| Alabama State returning minutes | 5.0% | The Hornets return almost nothing under a first-year coach. |
| Alabama State forced turnover rate (last season) | 19.3% | Ranked 62nd nationally and the Hornets' clearest way to steal possessions from a new A&M backcourt. |
| Alabama State opponent free throw rate (last season) | 42.1% | Ranked 336th of 365, a habit that hands points to a strong-shooting A&M guard group. |
