Northern Arizona Lumberjacks vs UNLV Rebels prediction: Northern Arizona's rebuilt defense faces an early test at UNLV
Both programs reshuffled their rosters, but the Lumberjacks open with the bigger question: whether 11 newcomers can fix one of the country's worst perimeter defenses.
| Spread | UNLV -21 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 148.5 |
- UNLV opens at home with more size and last season's far stronger profile; Northern Arizona's returning guards must shoot well to keep it close.
- Northern Arizona's three-point shooting against UNLV's rim protection, which ranked 24th nationally in block rate last season.
- No spread or total is posted yet. Last season's adjusted net ratings had UNLV 104th and Northern Arizona 312th.
Two rosters, mostly new
This is opening night for two teams that look little like last season's versions. Northern Arizona returns 37.8% of last season's minutes and 31.3% of its points, and Shane Burcar finished the roster with eight transfers, bringing his newcomer count to 11. UNLV, in Josh Pastner's second season, lost leading scorer Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn and rebuilt around transfers from Vanderbilt, Florida State, Tulsa and New Orleans, plus Las Vegas native Sebastian Mack.
That makes last season's numbers a loose guide, but they still frame the gap. UNLV finished with an adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) of 6.1, 104th of 365. Northern Arizona went 10-22 and finished 312th at -14.8. The Rebels were also the taller team by minutes-weighted height, 77.4 inches to 75.4.
The Lumberjacks' defense problem
Northern Arizona's offense was serviceable last season. Its defense was the reason for the losing record. Opponents made 38.2% of their threes, 361st of 365, and posted an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 55.8%, 355th. The Lumberjacks also struggled to finish possessions, ranking 288th in defensive rebound rate.
The newcomers are there to change that, and there is no proof yet that they will. UNLV didn't lean on the three last season, ranking 253rd in three-point attempt rate, but it made 54.2% of its twos, 104th nationally. A rebuilt Rebels backcourt will get room to probe a defense that allowed opponents 54.8% inside the arc.
Shooters against shot-blockers
Northern Arizona's best weapon was the outside shot. The Lumberjacks made 36.7% from three last season, 35th in the country, and the three returning starters can all stroke it. Brennan Peterson hit 41.1%, and Ryan Abelman made 52 threes. What left is significant: Isaiah Shaw, who shot 46.4% from deep, is now at UConn.
The Lumberjacks may need to live outside because the paint was hostile territory last season. UNLV blocked 13.1% of opponent two-point tries, 24th nationally. Northern Arizona rarely created second chances either, with an offensive rebound rate of 24.2% that ranked 348th, and its top departure up front, Traivar Jackson, took his 57.8% shooting with him.
Whistles and free throws
UNLV's games last season ran through the foul line on both ends. The Rebels drew free throws at a high clip, ranking 58th in free throw rate (attempts per field goal attempt), and gave them up just as freely, ranking 352nd defensively at 44.7%.
Neither team cashed in. Last season UNLV made 68.0% of its free throws (324th) and Northern Arizona 68.1% (322nd). Abelman, an 89.4% shooter last season, is the one returner Northern Arizona will want handling the ball late.
UNLV's availability and schedule
The Rebels' rotation carries several open questions. Sophomore guard Issac Williamson missed a recent exhibition with an undisclosed injury and was expected back for the opener as of Oct. 9. Vanderbilt transfer Tyler Harris hurt his MCL in summer workouts, and Pastner has been reported to expect him back before the season, with no newer update. Transfer AJ Storr has been reported as not currently eligible after a Tennessee appeals ruling, a status that remains unsettled. Howie Fleming Jr. received a hardship waiver for another year.
Northern Arizona reported no injuries. UNLV's slate stiffens quickly, with Samford, Stanford and a Players Era event featuring Kansas in the first weeks, so this opener is Pastner's best chance to settle a rotation.
