Utah Valley vs Nevada prediction: Styles Phipps and Nevada's ball security face Utah Valley's turnover hunters
Two heavily rebuilt rosters collide in Reno, and the possession battle between Utah Valley's pressure and Nevada's new point guard should decide it.
- Expect a possession fight: Utah Valley forces turnovers but gives the ball away too, while Nevada leans on a home floor and a careful backcourt.
- Styles Phipps against Utah Valley's pressure defense, which ranked 6th nationally in forced turnover rate last season.
- No line in our feed yet. Nevada covered its opener as a 12.5-point favorite, and that game stayed under 144.5.
Phipps against the pressure
Utah Valley built its identity last season on taking the ball away. The Wolverines forced turnovers on 22.5% of opponent possessions (turnover rate is giveaways per 100 possessions), 6th in the country, and their steal rate also ranked 6th. The catch is that they were just as generous on the other end: their own turnover rate of 20.6% ranked 354th.
That makes Nevada's new point guard the center of this game. Styles Phipps arrived from Pepperdine, where he averaged 5.2 assists last season, and he sparked his Wolf Pack debut by leading a 17-2 first-half run against Robert Morris. Nevada turned it over on just 11.8% of its possessions in that opener, 38th nationally. If Phipps keeps the ball that safe against Utah Valley's hands, the visitors lose their best weapon. If he doesn't, Utah Valley can win the possession count even on a night it shoots poorly.
