IU Indianapolis vs Morehead State prediction: IU Indy's breakneck pace tests a retooled Morehead State at home
Two rebuilt rosters with opposite tempos, and Morehead's sudden appetite for threes, run into an IU Indy defense that couldn't guard the arc last season.
- IU Indy will try to run Morehead out of its first home game; the Eagles need a slower game and better shooting than their opener.
- Watch Morehead's three-heavy attack against an IU Indy defense that allowed 38.6% from deep last season, 362nd nationally.
- No spread or total is posted yet. Morehead's opener closed at 153.5 and went under; IU Indy ranked third in pace last season.
Two tempos, one floor
IU Indianapolis plays fast, and it has under Ben Howlett, who is in his second season. Last season the Jaguars averaged 75.4 possessions per 40 minutes, third-fastest in Division I. In their opener at the new James T. Morris Arena they pushed it to 88.5, though the opponent, Miami-Middletown, tells us little about how that holds up against a real defense.
Morehead State prefers a walk. The Eagles ranked 204th in pace last season and played at 68.5 possessions in their opener at Western Kentucky. Whoever controls the speed controls the shape of this game. The last meeting went to IU Indy, 85-80, in Indianapolis last November.
Morehead's new love of the three
The most striking thing from Morehead's opener is how often it shot from deep. The Eagles took 55.2% of their shots from three at Western Kentucky, after ranking 346th in three-point attempt rate last season. They made only 21.9% of them. The game stayed close for a half before the Hilltoppers pulled away with threes of their own, and it ended 83-58.
The shift has a cause: Jon Carroll, last season's interior anchor, is now at Drake. Vince Dawson III, a 38% three-point shooter last season, went 1-for-8 in the opener and is the likeliest bounce-back candidate.
IU Indy's defense is where that approach could pay. Last season the Jaguars let opponents hit 38.6% from three, 362nd of 365. The caveat is heavy: IU Indy returns just 13.2% of last season's minutes, so that defense is mostly a different group of players now.
Turnovers and the glass
IU Indy's other constant is pressure. The Jaguars forced turnovers on 20.6% of opponent possessions last season, 29th nationally, and Peyton Heiss had four steals in the opener. Morehead gave the ball away on 19.1% of its possessions at Western Kentucky, 224th, close to where it sat a year ago.
The rebounding matchup used to favor Morehead. Last season the Eagles grabbed 36.4% of their own misses, a top-30 rate. IU Indy ranked 342nd on the defensive glass. Without Carroll, Morehead's offensive rebound rate fell to 23.1% in the opener, and getting back to winning second chances would ease the pressure on its shooting.
Two rosters starting over
Both programs rebuilt. Morehead returns 26.2% of last season's minutes from a 20-13 team, yet it was picked to tie for third in the OVC. Chase Dawson and Vince Dawson III were both named OVC preseason Players to Watch. This is the Eagles' first home game of the season, part of a slate of four Division I nonconference visitors after they had none last winter.
IU Indy went 7-25 last season and is almost entirely new. Heiss led the opener with 20 points, returning forward Kameron Tinsley added 17, and Idaho State transfer Gus Etchison scored 15. The Jaguars had only two practices in their new building before that opener, so a group still learning each other makes its first road trip. Both teams come in with 12 days off.
Key players
- Chase Dawson (Morehead State): Scored 13 points in 30 minutes at Western Kentucky with a team-high 26% usage rate.
- Vince Dawson III (Morehead State): A 38% three-point shooter last season who went 1-for-8 from deep in the opener.
- Clayton Parker (Morehead State): Gave Morehead 12 points off the bench at WKU, hitting both of his three-point attempts.
- Peyton Heiss (IU Indianapolis): Posted 20 points, 6 assists and 4 steals in 24 minutes in the opener.
- Kameron Tinsley (IU Indianapolis): Had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks in the opener after averaging 7.9 points last season.
- Gus Etchison (IU Indianapolis): Scored 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting in his IU Indy debut.
Numbers that matter
| IU Indy pace, last season | 75.4 | Possessions per 40 minutes, third-most in Division I, against Morehead's 204th-ranked pace. |
|---|---|---|
| Morehead 3-point attempt rate | 55.2% | Share of shots from three in the opener, a sharp turn from a team that ranked 346th last season. |
| IU Indy opponent 3-point %, last season | 38.6% | Ranked 362nd of 365, though few of those defenders are still on the roster. |
| IU Indy returning minutes | 13.2% | Share of last season's minutes back, which makes last season's team numbers a weak guide. |
| IU Indy forced turnover rate, last season | 20.6% | Ranked 29th nationally, a problem for a Morehead offense that turned it over on 19.1% of possessions in its opener. |
