Marshall vs Youngstown State prediction: Linus Holmstrom leads a rebuilt Youngstown State into Marshall's test

Two programs that remade their rosters both won on opening night, and Saturday's home opener at Beeghly Center shows which new identity holds up.

Quick take
  • Expect Youngstown State to fire away from three while Marshall's sharper opener and its defensive rebounding will be tested.
  • Holmstrom's perimeter volume against a Marshall backcourt that let Buffalo hit almost nothing from deep.
  • No line has been posted yet; Youngstown State already covered as a 10.5-point underdog in its win at St. Bonaventure.

Two rosters built from scratch

Almost nobody in Youngstown State's rotation wore a Penguins jersey last season. The roster returns 5.2% of last season's minutes, which turns a 15-17 finish into trivia. Ethan Faulkner, in his third season, rebuilt around transfers and four true freshmen.

Marshall changed less but still plenty. Corny Jackson's roster carries 11 newcomers and returns 25.7% of last season's minutes. Last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Marshall 183rd in net efficiency and Youngstown State 210th. With this much turnover, treat both figures as background, not a forecast.

The Penguins' new centerpiece is Linus Holmstrom, a transfer from VMI who shot 39.4% from three there last season. He scored 26 in the opener at St. Bonaventure. Marshall leans on returning guard Noah Otshudi, who started every game he played last season and opened with 16 points and 6 assists, plus Emmanuel Manyuon, who posted 22 points and 11 rebounds against Buffalo.

Youngstown State lives beyond the arc

The Penguins shoot threes because they have to. In the opener, 47.8% of their shots came from deep, 82nd nationally, and they made just 40.0% of their twos, which ranks 311th. Holmstrom alone took 13 threes.

That plan runs into a Marshall defense that held Buffalo to 18.5% from three. One game proves little, but it matters here: if Youngstown State's shooters go cold, the Penguins lack an inside game to fall back on. Marshall's own shooting was the opposite story, an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 62.7% that ranks 60th.

The glass flips the script

Rebounding was Marshall's weak spot last season, when the Herd ranked 321st in defensive rebound rate. Against Buffalo, Marshall grabbed 85.0% of the available defensive boards, 20th in the country.

That sets up the most interesting test of the night. Youngstown State rebounded 42.2% of its own misses at St. Bonaventure, 69th nationally, with Kelvin Amoako pulling down 10 boards in 24 minutes. Marshall is also the bigger team by minutes-weighted height, 77.8 inches to 75.8. If the Herd keep the Penguins to one shot, a three-heavy offense gets fewer second chances to recover from misses.

A home opener after two weeks off

Both teams come in with 12 days of rest, so neither has a scheduling edge. This appears to be Youngstown State's first home game after opening on the road, a chance for a new roster to introduce itself to the Beeghly Center crowd. The Horizon League preseason poll picked the Penguins ninth.

The openers also hint at game shape. Marshall led Buffalo 45-24 at halftime behind a 21-3 first-half run and cruised. Youngstown State trailed St. Bonaventure at the break and rallied for a 79-71 win, a game that stayed under its closing total. One team has shown it can run away from an opponent; the other has shown it can grind back into a game.

Key players

  • Emmanuel Manyuon (Marshall): Scored 22 with 11 rebounds against Buffalo, hitting 4 of 5 threes.
  • Noah Otshudi (Marshall): Averaged 14.5 points last season and opened this one with 16 points and 6 assists.
  • Fazl Oshodi (Marshall): Scored 16 off the bench in 21 minutes with a team-high 39 usage rate.
  • Bryce Slay (Marshall): Jumped from a reserve role last season to 19 points on 8 of 12 shooting in the opener.
  • Linus Holmstrom (Youngstown State): Scored 26 points with 6 made threes in the win at St. Bonaventure.
  • Kelvin Amoako (Youngstown State): Posted 14 points and 10 rebounds on 5 of 7 shooting in 24 minutes.
  • Dom Aekins (Youngstown State): Ran the offense with 7 assists, though he shot 4 of 11.
  • Jeff Nwankwo (Youngstown State): Had 11 points and 8 rebounds but needed 12 shots to get there.

Numbers that matter

YSU returning minutes5.2%Youngstown State's roster played almost none of last season's minutes, so last season's numbers say little.
YSU 3-point attempt rate47.8%The Penguins took nearly half their shots from deep in the opener, 82nd nationally.
YSU 2-point %40.0%Ranks 311th, which is why the three-point plan has no easy backup.
Marshall defensive rebound %85.0%Ranked 20th after the opener, a reversal from last season's 321st.
YSU offensive rebound %42.2%Ranks 69th and goes straight at Marshall's improved defensive glass.
