Delaware State vs East Carolina prediction: East Carolina's transfer-built roster faces a Delaware State team still rebuilding
Both teams return little of last season, so the numbers that matter most come from one opener each and from what the newcomers did elsewhere.
- East Carolina's guard-heavy transfer group should control the ball and the arc at home against a Hornets team that ranked last nationally in adjusted offense.
- Cian Medley will run ECU's offense against a Delaware State defense that forced turnovers at the 27th-highest rate last season.
- No line yet. ECU closed -15.5 against USC Upstate, won 83-70 without covering, and the game went over 152.
Strangers in purple and gold
Michael Schwartz opens his fifth season at East Carolina with a roster that barely resembles last year's. Players on this season's team accounted for just 6.8% of last season's minutes. Only Jayshayne Woodard, Eli DeLaurier and Daithi Quinn are back. The rest is a transfer haul built from Kent State, UTEP, Charleston Southern, Louisiana Tech and Arizona State, plus four first-year players.
That makes last season's 11-20 record and its adjusted net rating of -8.6 (259th nationally; adjusted efficiency is points per 100 possessions, corrected for opponents) a weak guide. The opener is a better one. ECU beat USC Upstate 83-70 on Nov. 2, its 27th straight season-opening win, and Kaseem Watson led everyone with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Delaware State's long climb
The Hornets went 8-23 last season and finished with an adjusted offensive rating that ranked 365th of 365. Their adjusted net rating of -28.1 ranked 362nd. About a third of last season's minutes return, and Stan Waterman is in his sixth season.
Their opener looked very different: an 86-52 win over Saint Vincent with four players in double figures. Saint Vincent is not a Division I opponent, so those shooting numbers say little about this game. Nehemiah Reedus scored 19 on 8-of-10 shooting, and Nasir Muhammad added 18 with four threes.
The schedule tests the Hornets well before they reach Greenville. Delaware State plays at Navy on Nov. 5 and at Georgetown on Nov. 10, so it will arrive in Greenville after two straight road games.
ECU's new range
Last season's Pirates couldn't shoot. Their 28.8% from three ranked 361st, and their effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) ranked 353rd. The opener suggested the transfers changed that. ECU made 12 threes against Upstate, nine of them in the first half, and built a 20-point lead.
Watson is the best bet to keep it going. He shot 38.2% from deep on 152 attempts at UTEP last season. Brycen Blaine took 217 threes at Charleston Southern and went 3-of-6 in the opener. Delaware State's defense allowed 34.0% from three last season, 207th nationally, so open looks should be there.
The turnover fight
This is where Delaware State can make the game uncomfortable. Last season the Hornets forced turnovers on 20.6% of opponent possessions, 27th in the country, and ranked 45th in steal rate. Reedus had four steals in the opener.
The problem was the other end. Delaware State gave the ball away at that same 20.6% rate, which ranked 353rd. ECU's opener showed a defense that pressures too: Upstate turned it over on 28.6% of possessions. Medley, who handed out 11 assists while shooting 4-of-13, is the player who has to keep the Pirates' giveaways down against the Hornets' hands.
Market and history
No spread or total has been posted. ECU's only priced game is a reference point: the Pirates closed as 15.5-point favorites against Upstate and did not cover, while the game went over a 152 total.
The last meeting came on Dec. 20, 2023, a 79-50 East Carolina win at Minges. With both rosters remade since then, it says more about the programs than these players. Tip is set for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Numbers that matter
| ECU returning minutes | 6.8% | Almost nothing carries over from last season, so the transfers' track records matter more than last season's team stats. |
|---|---|---|
| Delaware State adjusted offense, last season | 365th | The Hornets finished last in Division I in opponent-adjusted scoring efficiency last season. |
| ECU 3-point %, last season | 28.8% | Ranked 361st, which is why the 12 threes in the opener stood out. |
| Delaware State forced turnover rate, last season | 20.6% | Ranked 27th nationally and is the Hornets' clearest path to extra possessions. |
| ECU closing spread vs. USC Upstate | -15.5 | ECU won 83-70 and did not cover in its only priced game. |
