Coppin St Eagles vs Virginia Tech Hokies prediction: Virginia Tech's new shooters open against Coppin State's broken perimeter defense
A Hokies roster rebuilt through the portal debuts against a Coppin State defense that gave up threes at nearly the worst rate in Division I last season.
| Spread | Virginia Tech -30.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 151.5 |
- Tech's guards should feast from the arc and on Coppin turnovers; the real question is how fast a roster this new finds its rhythm.
- Ethan Copeland and Ben Hammond against a Coppin defense that allowed 37.8% from three last season, 360th of 365.
- Tech is -30.5 with a 151.5 total, unchanged since our feed's first look; Coppin's 22.3% turnover rate last season bears most on that spread.
A new Tech roster debuts
Mike Young opens his eighth season in Blacksburg tonight with a team that barely resembles last year's. Players on this season's roster logged just 37.2% of last season's minutes, so last season's team numbers describe a group that has mostly scattered. Neo Avdalas left for North Carolina and Jaden Schutt for Kansas State.
The core that stayed is the right one. Ben Hammond shot 43.1% from three last season. Amani Hansberry averaged 14.3 points. Hansberry hurt his right knee in the regular-season finale at Virginia and missed the ACC Tournament opener, but his return for a senior year was announced in April, and both he and Tyler Johnson, who lost much of last season to a lower-body injury, appear in projected starting fives published this week. No injury update on either has surfaced since mid-October.
The newcomers bring real production. Ethan Copeland scored 15.0 points a game at Stetson. Isaiah Elohim added 12.4 at Florida Atlantic, and Miles Heide, from San Diego State, projects as the starting big. Jaylen Curry, from Oklahoma State, could push his way into the starting five.
Threes against a defense that allows them
One of Coppin State's clear weaknesses last season sat on the perimeter. Opponents made 37.8% of their threes, 360th of 365, and they took threes at the 56th-highest rate in the country. Teams didn't have to work for those looks.
Tech's portal haul arrived built to punish that. Copeland made 42.9% from deep at Stetson on heavy volume, and Butta Johnson, from Clemson, gives Young another shooter off the bench. Driving lanes don't offer Coppin much relief either: opponents shot 53.5% on twos, 280th nationally.
The Eagles struggled to answer at the other end. They made 30.5% of their own threes last season, 336th, and top returner Hussain Williams shot well below that from deep.
Coppin's ball security problem
The surest path to a lopsided margin runs through Coppin's turnovers. The Eagles gave it away on 22.3% of their possessions last season (turnover rate), 361st in Division I. Tech's defense forced turnovers only at a middling clip, 152nd, so this edge comes more from Coppin's ball handling than from Tech's pressure.
The glass offers Coppin its one realistic way to steal extra possessions. Both teams were poor on the defensive boards last season: Coppin ranked 339th in defensive rebound rate and Tech 300th. Coppin also got to the line often, but it made only 67.4% of its free throws, which limits how much that helps.
The market and the margin
Seven books have Tech at -30.5 with a total of 151.5, and neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game Tuesday morning. The last time these teams played, in November 2023, Tech won 100-55.
The ratings gap explains the size of the spread. Coppin finished last season with an adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) of -29.9, 363rd of 365. Tech finished 55th. Both figures are last season's, and Tech's roster churn makes its number the softer guide.
Coppin also has an unsettled eligibility case. Villanova transfer Tafara Gapare petitioned for a fifth season, and no ruling has been reported, though the school's roster lists him as a fifth-year player.
