Portland Trail Blazers vs Sacramento Kings prediction: Kings' thin frontcourt faces Clingan and Portland's relentless offensive glass

With Raynaud, Cardwell and Simmons all out, Sacramento's home opener hinges on whether it can keep Portland off the boards and off the 3-point line.

Quick take
  • Portland's size and shooting should control the glass and the arc unless Sacramento's guards, led by LaVine and a returning Monk, get hot early.
  • Donovan Clingan against a Kings frontcourt missing Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell, with Precious Achiuwa carrying the load inside.
  • Portland is favored by 8.5, up from 6.75 when our feed first saw the game, after its 124-83 opening rout of Phoenix.

A frontcourt running on empty

Sacramento opens its home schedule with a rotation that has been gutted inside. The Trail Blazers arrive off a 124-83 dismantling of Phoenix. Maxime Raynaud, who averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds last season, is out with a knee injury, and the team said Oct. 15 he would miss at least the first five or six games. Dylan Cardwell (calf) is also out. Ben Simmons is done for the season after surgery to repair a torn Achilles.

That leaves Precious Achiuwa as the most experienced big body against Donovan Clingan, who pulled down 11.6 rebounds a night last season. Portland rebounded 38.1% of its own misses against Phoenix, 3rd in the league. That is not a one-night fluke: the Blazers ranked 2nd in offensive rebound rate last season too. Every extra possession Portland creates on the glass is one a short-handed Kings team has to answer.

Morant and Lillard reshape Portland

This is not last season's 42-40 Portland team, though about seven of every ten minutes return. Ja Morant came over from Memphis in an offseason trade and made his Blazers debut Wednesday. He averaged 8.1 assists in 20 games with the Grizzlies last season. Damian Lillard is back after missing all of last season with a torn Achilles.

Deni Avdija, who averaged 24.2 points last season, was questionable for the opener with right ankle soreness and does not appear on the latest league injury report. Shaedon Sharpe remains out until March after knee surgery. Reserves Branden Carlson (concussion) and Chris Youngblood (ankle) were ruled out for Friday on the latest league report, though their status could still change.

The one crack to watch is ball security. Portland ranked 30th of 30 in turnover rate last season, and Sacramento forced turnovers at a 17.5% clip in its opener, 9th in the league. Live-ball steals are the cleanest path for the Kings to manufacture easy points.
