Atlanta Hawks vs Charlotte Hornets prediction: Short-handed Hornets open at home against Atlanta's high-speed Hawks
Without Kon Knueppel and Coby White, Charlotte's thin backcourt has to hold onto the ball against a Hawks team that just scored 72 in a half.
| Spread | Atlanta Hawks -2.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 227 |
- Atlanta wants a track meet; Charlotte needs a slower game built on its new frontcourt and fewer giveaways than its opener.
- Charlotte's ball security against Atlanta's hands: the Hornets turned it over on 20.2% of possessions Wednesday, 26th in the league.
- Atlanta is favored by 3 on the road, unchanged since our feed first saw it; Charlotte covered 42 of 65 lined games last season.
Charlotte's home opener, minus the guards
The Hornets open Spectrum Center with half their projected backcourt in street clothes. Kon Knueppel (hamstring), Coby White (calf) and Grant Williams (hamstring) were all ruled out Thursday, and two-way guard Kylan Boswell remains out after knee surgery. Knueppel is the biggest loss: he shot 42.5% from three last season.
Charlotte has already shown it can survive the shortage. The Hornets won 110-103 at Brooklyn on Wednesday while short-handed. Naz Reid posted 20 points and 11 rebounds in his debut. Grayson Allen added 21 off the bench, and Dennis Schröder scored eight straight points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
This is also the first half of a home back-to-back, with Miami coming in Saturday, so Charles Lee's committee approach to minutes may stretch further than he'd like.
Atlanta brings speed and bodies
The Hawks opened with a 132-125 win at Orlando as an underdog, rallying after a rough third quarter. Jalen Johnson is the engine. He averaged 22.5 points and 7.9 assists last season, and the Orlando game ended with him and Paolo Banchero in a tense exchange.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker gives Atlanta a second shot-maker after hitting 39.9% from three last season. The new wrinkle is Lu Dort at power forward. He arrived from Oklahoma City, and his size and defense at that spot let Snyder play small and fast.
Atlanta is thinner up front. Mouhamed Gueye is out after surgery on a fractured left foot, and Henri Veesaar is done for the season with a torn ACL. Rookie Tyler Bilodeau (shoulder) has been listed day-to-day, and his Friday status hasn't been confirmed.
The turnover battle decides control
Charlotte's real weakness is giveaways, and it isn't new. The Hornets turned it over on 20.2% of their possessions in the opener. Last season they ranked 27th in turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions), so a guard-depleted group handling more of the ball is a worry.
Atlanta is built to punish that. The Hawks forced turnovers on 17.8% of Orlando's possessions, 5th in the league, and Dyson Daniels averaged 2.0 steals last season. Every live-ball turnover feeds the transition game Snyder wants.
The Hornets can play that game too. They forced turnovers on 21.2% of Brooklyn's possessions, 2nd in the league, a sharp change from last season's 27th-ranked mark. If Charlotte wins the possession math with that pressure and its offensive glass, the short rotation matters less.
Tempo, threes and the line
Atlanta played at the league's fastest pace on opening night and put up 72 first-half points. The Hawks also lived at the line, with a free throw rate (free throws per field goal attempt) of 40.0%, 7th in the league.
Charlotte is the opposite. The Hornets took 51.6% of their shots from three, the most of any team, but made just 31.2%. They also ranked last in free throw rate. Their scoring comes in volume from deep, and without Knueppel that volume falls to Miller, Allen and O'Neale.
The market makes Atlanta a 3-point road favorite, with the Hawks at -142 on the moneyline. The total sits at 225.5, down from 226 when our feed first saw it. Charlotte was a strong under team last season, going under in 41 of 65 lined games. The Hornets also won three of four meetings last season, including a 133-126 win in Charlotte in December.
