Minnesota Timberwolves vs Orlando Magic prediction: Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball bring a three-point flood to Orlando

Minnesota lived behind the arc in its opener, and a short-handed Magic defense that just gave up 132 points has to find a way to close out.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 23, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a fast, high-volume game: Minnesota hunts threes, Orlando attacks the paint and the line, and Magic turnovers could tilt it.
  • Watch Edwards against Orlando's closeouts: he hit nine threes in Miami, and opponents shot 38.9% from deep on the Magic.
  • Minnesota is favored by 1.5 on the road; the total slid from 238.25 to 234.5 even after Orlando allowed 132 points.

Minnesota's new shape

Minnesota rebuilt its backcourt around Anthony Edwards and learned in one night how loud it can get. Edwards scored 45 points and hit nine threes in a 131-106 win at Miami, joining Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history to reach 40 in consecutive season openers. LaMelo Ball added 21 in his Timberwolves debut. Now the Wolves visit a Magic team that opened Sean Sweeney's tenure as coach by giving up 132 points to Atlanta.

The shape of the Miami win matters more than the score. Half of Minnesota's shots came from deep: its 3-point attempt rate (threes per field goal attempt) of 51.0% ranked 2nd of 30 after opening night, and it made 42.0% of them. This is not last season's team. Only 64.3% of last season's minutes return, with Julius Randle now in Brooklyn and Naz Reid in Charlotte as part of the price for Ball.

Orlando's perimeter defense is where that volume lands. Atlanta shot 38.9% from three against the Magic, 23rd in the league. One game is a small sample for both teams, but it is the matchup most likely to swing the scoreboard.

Orlando's path runs inside

The Magic's counter is to go straight at Minnesota's interior. Opponents made 64.6% of their 2-pointers against the Wolves in the opener, 27th of 30, and Rudy Gobert will carry much of the burden at the rim.

Paolo Banchero is the engine after a 35-point night against Atlanta. He also handed out 10 assists, and Nikola Vucevic, who averaged 15.1 points for Chicago last season, gives Orlando a second big who can score near the basket or step out.

Orlando also lived at the line, posting a free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt) of 45.9%, 4th in the league. If the game stays close, Minnesota's own free throw shooting is a worry: it made 62.1% in Miami.

The turnover problem

Banchero's big night came with a cost. The Magic turned it over 20 times against Atlanta, a turnover rate (giveaways per 100 possessions) of 17.8 that ranked 24th. Minnesota's defense forced turnovers at the 8th-highest rate in Miami.

That is the most dangerous combination for Orlando. Every empty trip hands the ball to a team built to turn possessions into threes, and transition chances against a scrambling defense are where a shooting night becomes a blowout. Orlando brought back nearly its whole roster, so cleaning this up under a new coach is the most fixable item on its list.

Orlando's thin rotation

Orlando enters short-handed. Anthony Black, who averaged 15.0 points last season, sprained his right ankle and the league injury report lists him out, as it does Jonathan Isaac (knee). One Friday injury report listed both as day-to-day, so their status is not fully settled until the official report near tip. Noah Penda (partially torn right hamstring) and rookie Izaiyah Nelson (recovering from ankle surgery) are out.

Franz Wagner, banged up in the preseason, played Wednesday and is not on Friday's injury lists. Tristan da Silva gave the Magic a lift off the bench in the opener, and Orlando may need more of that with Black out.

Minnesota is without Donte DiVincenzo, who is recovering from Achilles surgery. Neither team is on a back-to-back, and Minnesota is playing its second straight road game.

Where the market sits

Minnesota is a 1.5-point road favorite, a spread that hasn't moved since our feed first saw the game. The total has moved, sliding from 238.25 to 234.5. That drift runs against the opening-night evidence: Orlando's opener went over and its defense ranked near the bottom, while Minnesota's game in Miami stayed under only because the Heat couldn't keep up.

Orlando owned this matchup last season, winning 119-92 in Minnesota and 132-120 at home. Those games featured a Wolves rotation built around Randle and Reid, so they say more about Orlando's continuity than about this version of Minnesota.
