Miami Heat vs Los Angeles Lakers prediction: Luka Doncic's second night takes aim at Miami's porous perimeter

A rested Heat team with Giannis Antetokounmpo catches the Lakers on a back-to-back, but Miami's three-point defense gives Los Angeles's hot shooters plenty of room.

Quick take
  • A fast, high-scoring game in which Lakers shooting tests a rested Heat team that has to win the possession battle to keep up.
  • Luka Doncic, a night after scoring 45, against a Miami defense allowing 40.5% from three, 29th in the league.
  • Lakers -2.5 with a 237.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw it; Miami plays at the 4th-fastest pace.

Stars on uneven rest

Luka Doncic scored 45 points in Sunday's home win over Toronto. Monday he goes again on the second night of a back-to-back, against a Miami team that arrives with three days of rest and Giannis Antetokounmpo at the top of its scouting report. Monday's game also opens a five-game road trip for the Heat.

Antetokounmpo's last outing was loud. He posted a triple-double of 31 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists in a 145-125 NBA Cup win over Indiana, and Bam Adebayo added 27. Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points on 62.4% shooting for Milwaukee last season, and Erik Spoelstra and Adebayo have both spoken this week about how to slow Doncic.

Availability is mostly settled for the Lakers. Ziaire Williams (left foot) is out, so Jake LaRavia starts in his place, and Adou Thiero (knee) is not expected back before Nov. 9. Miami lists Tim Hardaway Jr. as questionable for personal reasons; if he sits, more minutes go to Pelle Larsson and Klay Thompson. Larsson's own status is unsettled after an ankle sprain was reported, and Simone Fontecchio (illness) may be doubtful, though the league report lists only Hardaway for Miami.

Miami's three-point problem

The matchup most likely to decide this game sits on the perimeter. Heat opponents are shooting 40.5% from three, 29th of 30, and they take 45.4% of their shots from deep, the 3rd-highest share in the league. That is a defense conceding both volume and accuracy.

The Lakers are built to punish it. They make 38.9% of their threes (4th) and lead the league in effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 makes, at 60.0%. They also shoot 61.4% on twos, 1st in the NBA, so Miami cannot simply run them off the line.

Miami's answer is the paint. The Heat score 54.3 points there per game, 4th in the league, with Antetokounmpo and Adebayo leading the charge. They will be driving into a Lakers defense that blocks 13.8% of opponents' two-point tries, 2nd in the league.

Where the Lakers give it back

The Lakers' efficiency comes with a leak in ball security. They turn it over on 18.2% of possessions, 27th in the league, while Miami protects the ball at a 14.1% rate, 5th. Extra shots for the Heat are the clearest path to an upset.

The defensive glass is another soft spot: Los Angeles grabs only 67.2% of available defensive rebounds, 29th. Miami has not been able to exploit that kind of weakness so far, ranking 24th in offensive rebound rate at 24.8%.

The Lakers also live at the line, ranking 2nd in free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) at 37.1%. Miami ranks 4th at keeping opponents off the stripe, so this is a real tug-of-war for Doncic's whistle.

A number that hasn't moved

The market made the Lakers 2.5-point favorites with a 237.5 total, and neither number has budged since our feed first recorded it Monday morning across 11 books. The home moneyline sits at -132.

Tempo points toward points. Miami plays at the 4th-fastest pace in the league, and the Lakers lead the NBA with 64.6 first-half points per game. The Heat allow 61.7 before halftime, 27th.

Miami is 2-4 against the spread, though it covered its last two after an 0-3 start straight up. The Lakers are 4-3 ATS and won both meetings last season, 130-120 at home and 134-126 in Miami. That history comes with a caveat: the Lakers return only 39.9% of last season's minutes, so last season's team numbers describe a different group.
