Milwaukee Bucks vs Minnesota Timberwolves prediction: Without Edwards, LaMelo Ball steers Minnesota into a reeling Bucks defense

The Wolves are laying double digits without their best player, and the question is whether Ball's offense can bury a Milwaukee team that falls behind early.

Quick take
  • Minnesota should control the paint and the first half. The cover depends on whether a Ball-led offense avoids sloppy stretches.
  • Rudy Gobert, back from a back issue, against a Bucks defense that ranks 26th in opponent 2-point percentage.
  • Wolves -10.5 and 234 haven't moved since our feed first saw them; Minnesota is 6-1 against the spread.

Life after Edwards begins

Minnesota has to learn who it is without Anthony Edwards, and Monday's visitor may be the most forgiving test on the schedule. The Bucks arrive 1-5 in their first season after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. Their defense has allowed 118.8 points per 100 possessions, 28th in the league.

Edwards had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Oct. 29 and is out, with the injury report listing an expected return of Dec. 21. He averaged 28.8 points last season. The Wolves won three of four with him and have lost two of three since. Donte DiVincenzo is also out after Achilles surgery.

That puts the offense in LaMelo Ball's hands. He averaged 20.1 points for Charlotte last season, and Finch has been blunt about the giveaways: "He's got to figure it out," Finch said. "The turnovers are unnecessary." Milwaukee is a poor team to make him pay. The Bucks rank 30th of 30 in forced turnover rate, the share of opponent possessions that end in a giveaway. Ayo Dosunmu will handle the ball more than usual, and Jaylen Clark is pushing for rotation minutes.

Gobert and the early hole

Rudy Gobert missed Saturday with a back issue but was not on the injury report for Monday as of Sunday evening. That should send Joan Beringer back to the bench. The timing helps Minnesota. Milwaukee allows opponents to make 57.8% of their 2-pointers, 26th in the league, and Gobert shot 68.2% from the field last season.

The Bucks' troubles hit hardest before halftime. They score 51.5 first-half points per game, last in the league. In their last two home games they trailed Houston 57-35 and Cleveland 72-46 at the break. Minnesota's defense, fourth in efficiency, is built to make that kind of hole even deeper.

Milwaukee's rebuilt rotation

Taylor Jenkins took over after Doc Rivers resigned, and he inherited a roster that kept only 64.3% of last season's minutes. That makes last season's numbers a shaky guide. The Bucks hit 38.7% of their threes a year ago, but this group is at 33.9%, 21st.

The new core leans on former Heat players. Tyler Herro averaged 20.5 points for Miami last season, and Kel'el Ware had 19 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's loss to Cleveland. Rookies Brayden Burries and Nate Ament each scored 14 in that game. "Night to night, they're playing with different personnel groupings," Jenkins said. Milwaukee shoots plenty of threes, but Minnesota holds opponents to 31.2% from deep, sixth in the league.

Where the number sits

Minnesota is a 10.5-point favorite, and the total sits at 234. Neither has budged since our feed first recorded them Monday morning. The Wolves are 6-1 ATS so far, though most of that came with Edwards in the lineup. Milwaukee games have gone over five times in six.

Pace points the same way. The Bucks play the third-fastest tempo in the league, and Minnesota isn't far behind. One drag on a big Wolves margin: they make 66.1% of their free throws, worst in the NBA, which can slow a late push. Minnesota swept last season's two meetings, including a 139-106 win in Milwaukee, but both rosters look very different now.
