Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks prediction: Knicks lay 14.5 points with an offense still searching for itself
New York has dominated this rivalry, but a stalled attack and a 1-5 record against the spread make a big number against a tired Brooklyn team harder to trust than it looks.
| Spread | New York Knicks -14.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 218.5 |
- The Knicks' top-10 defense should control a Nets team on a back-to-back. The open question is whether New York scores enough to win big.
- Watch Julius Randle at MSG against his former team. Brooklyn needs him and Michael Porter Jr. to carry an offense ranked 29th.
- Knicks -14.5 and a 221.5 total haven't moved since our feed first saw the game. New York is 1-5 against the spread this season.
A big number for a stalled offense
The Knicks return most of the group that ran one of the league's best offenses last season. Players still on the roster logged 86.4% of last season's minutes, and that team scored 116.7 points per 100 possessions, 3rd in the NBA. Six games into this season, the same core sits at 105.9, 22nd of 30.
The drop shows up inside the arc. New York is making 47.1% of its twos, dead last in the league, and it has won just once against the spread in six tries. The defense has held up well, so the losses haven't been blowouts. The trouble is that a 14.5-point spread asks the Knicks to pull away, and this offense hasn't shown it can yet.
Randle returns to a thin Brooklyn
Julius Randle comes back to Madison Square Garden in a Nets jersey after averaging 21.1 points for Minnesota last season. He and Michael Porter Jr., who put up 24.2 a night for Brooklyn last season, are the whole plan on offense. The Nets score 103.0 points per 100 possessions, 29th in the league.
Brooklyn's worst habit is giving the ball away. Its turnover rate is 18.3 per 100 possessions, 28th of 30. The Knicks, though, are poorly built to punish that. They force turnovers at a rate of 13.0, which ranks 29th. The Nets also play the second night of a back-to-back, a day after a 98-90 win at Indiana that ended an 0-5 start.
Threes and second chances
Brooklyn lets it fly. Its 3-point attempt rate of 48.0% of shots ranks 3rd in the league. New York's defense invites those looks: opponents take 45.3% of their shots from deep against the Knicks, the 4th-highest share. If the Nets get hot from outside, a large cushion gets hard to build.
The Knicks' best way to make up for missed shots is the offensive glass. They grab 30.3% of their own misses, 6th in the league. Brooklyn has been stingy there, though, ranking 2nd in defensive rebound rate at 77.8%. Second-chance points may decide how much margin New York can build.
Who is available
Knicks guard Jose Alvarado is questionable with a left ankle sprain. He practiced fully Sunday but hadn't been cleared. Karl-Anthony Towns played through a left wrist issue on Oct. 30. No newer update has surfaced, and he is expected to start.
Brooklyn's rookie Mikel Brown Jr. is the swing piece, and his status is unsettled. He sat Sunday for back management. The coach said he was expected back Monday on a minutes limit, but another preview says he will sit, and the league report still lists him out for rest. Egor Demin (right leg bone bruise) is out. As of Oct. 29, the Nets said he would be reevaluated in a week. Tyler Bilodeau (right shoulder) is also out.
What the market is pricing
New York is a 14.5-point favorite with a total of 221.5, and neither number has moved since our feed first saw the game. History supports the Knicks. They swept all four meetings last season, including a 120-66 rout in January. The last of those meetings, in March, was a 93-92 escape.
The total leans on two slow-starting offenses. The Knicks score 51.7 first-half points per game, 29th in the league, and five of their six games have gone under. Brooklyn's 3-3 mark against the spread includes a cover as a 13.5-point underdog in a one-point loss at Boston.
