Washington Wizards vs Orlando Magic prediction: Banchero-less Magic fire threes into Washington's stingy perimeter defense

On the second night of a back-to-back, Orlando's shorthanded rotation needs its jumpers to fall against a Wizards defense that hasn't let anyone shoot from deep.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a grinding game: a tired, banged-up Orlando lineup hoisting threes while Washington pounds the paint and lives at the free throw line.
  • Desmond Bane and Tristan da Silva against a Wizards defense holding opponents to 28.7% from three, best in the league.
  • Magic -2 and a 224.5 total haven't moved since our feed first saw them; five of six Wizards games have gone under.

Orlando's plan runs through the arc

The Magic have leaned on the perimeter this season, even without Paolo Banchero. Their 3-point attempt rate, the share of their shots taken from deep, is 46.5%, 6th-highest in the league. Orlando also moves the ball well, ranking 2nd in assist rate, so the threes come off passes rather than isolation.

Washington is the worst possible opponent for that approach so far. The Wizards hold teams to 28.7% from three, best in the NBA, and lead the league in opponent effective field goal percentage (which counts threes 1.5 times) at 48.1%. Opponents aren't being run off the line, either: 43.7% of their shots against Washington are threes. That points to a defense that has contested well and benefited from misses, and some of that will cool off.

If it doesn't tonight, Orlando has little to fall back on. The Magic rank 27th in points in the paint, so a cold shooting night leaves them with nowhere else to score.

Washington wins inside and at the line

The Wizards play an old-fashioned style. They take threes on just 37.7% of their shots, 28th in the league, and instead pile up 52.3 points in the paint per game, 5th. Their free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) sits at 34.3%, also 5th.

That profile lines up well against Orlando's interior. The Magic rank 28th in block rate, and Jonathan Isaac remains out. Deandre Ayton shot 67.1% from the field for the Lakers last season, and Anthony Davis gives Washington a second big body around the rim.

The frontcourt depth is the question. Alex Sarr is questionable with left knee soreness, Anthony Gill is questionable with back spasms, and Tristan Vukcevic is out with a hip issue.

Last season's 17-65 team and its last-ranked defense are a poor guide. Davis, Ayton, Trae Young, Khris Middleton and top pick AJ Dybantsa have all arrived since then.

A thin Magic roster on no rest

Orlando lost 108-97 to Boston on Sunday and turns around to host Washington tonight. The Wizards come in on three days of rest.

The Magic's injury list as of Monday still includes Banchero, Jalen Suggs, Isaac, Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson. Banchero's high ankle sprain was expected on Oct. 24 to cost him four to six weeks. Suggs, who has a bone bruise in his right knee, was due for re-evaluation two weeks after Oct. 26.

Anthony Black has absorbed the load, averaging 16.5 points with Banchero out. He and da Silva each scored 23 against Boston, but turnovers sank Orlando again. The Magic's turnover rate of 16.8 per 100 possessions ranks 24th. One mercy: Washington ranks 27th in forcing turnovers, so this may be a night Orlando's sloppiness goes unpunished.

For Washington, Tre Johnson was questionable with an Achilles issue before the Oct. 30 game. He isn't on Monday's lists, but his status for tonight hasn't been confirmed.

A short number for a struggling host

Orlando is a 2-point favorite despite going 0-3 at home and 2-4 against the spread. The line and the 224.5 total haven't moved since our feed first recorded them Monday morning.

The total is where Washington's identity shows. Five of the Wizards' six games have gone under, including a 95-79 win over Charlotte on Oct. 30. A low-volume, paint-first offense paired with an elite perimeter defense keeps scores down, and a fatigued Magic team adds to that pull.

The Magic won three of four meetings last season. Both rosters have changed enough since then that the history carries little weight.
