Boston Celtics vs Houston Rockets prediction: Rockets' offensive glass tests a Celtics team on no rest

Houston owns the league's best offense, and Boston arrives on the second night of a back-to-back with one of its worst defensive rebounding units and an unsettled frontcourt.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Houston should win the possession battle on the boards against a Celtics team on a back-to-back; Boston needs its high three-point volume to land.
  • Houston's offensive rebounding (32.4%, 3rd) against Boston's defensive rebounding (68.4%, 27th), with Mitchell Robinson's availability unsettled.
  • Houston -5 and a 219 total haven't moved since our feed first saw them; the Rockets are 6-1 against the spread.

Second chances decide it

Two of the conference's best starts collide at Toyota Center tonight: Houston at 6-1, Boston at 5-1. The Rockets have the league's top offense at 118.9 points per 100 possessions. The Celtics won in Orlando on Sunday and play again Monday night, so the shape of this game may come down to who finishes possessions.

That starts on the glass. Houston rebounds 32.4% of its own misses, 3rd in the league, and it led the NBA in that stat last season. Boston has gone the other way. The Celtics secure 68.4% of opponents' misses, which ranks 27th, after ranking 4th in defensive rebounding last season.

The man signed to fix that may not play. Mitchell Robinson averaged 8.8 rebounds in under 20 minutes a night for the Knicks last season, but he sat Sunday's game for rest and reports on his status for tonight conflict. Without him, Neemias Queta carries the load; he averaged 8.4 rebounds last season. Houston's own depth up front is thin: Steven Adams is out with a calf strain and Clint Capela is questionable with a sprained right ankle. Alperen Sengun, who averaged 8.9 rebounds last season, and Amen Thompson remain the Rockets' engines on the boards.

Threes against a paint wall

Boston's defense makes a clear trade. It walls off the rim, allowing a league-low 37.7 points in the paint per game, and in exchange it gives up the most three-point attempts in the league: 50.6% of opponents' shots come from deep.

Houston doesn't usually take that invitation. The Rockets rank 26th in three-point attempt rate, but they make 39.0% of the threes they do take, 3rd in the NBA. Kevin Durant shot 41.3% from deep last season, and if Reed Sheppard (back, questionable) plays, Houston adds another willing shooter.

The Celtics will fire away regardless; their 3-point attempt rate ranks 7th. That runs into a Houston defense holding opponents to 30.2% from three, 4th in the league. Boston's better path may be inside. Houston allows opponents 57.4% on twos, 25th in the league, and the Celtics make 56.5% of theirs, 7th.

A rebuilt Boston backcourt

These Celtics are not last season's team. Jaylen Brown, who averaged 28.7 points last season, was traded to Philadelphia for Paul George and draft picks, and Boston returns 74.7% of last season's minutes. George averaged 17.3 points for the 76ers last season in 37 games.

Payton Pritchard has absorbed much of the creation. He scored 30 against Chicago on Friday before a poor shooting night in Orlando. Derrick White steadies the group with 5.4 assists per game last season, though he made just 32.7% of his threes. Devin Carter remains out with mononucleosis.

Boston's sharpest weapon so far is pressure. The Celtics force turnovers on 17.8% of opponent possessions, 4th in the league, while Houston gives the ball away at a middling rate, 14th. Live-ball steals would be Boston's best way to steal easy points from a Houston defense that allows 50.0 points in the paint per game.

What the line says

Houston is a 5-point favorite with a total of 219, and neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game. The Rockets have covered in six of seven games and gone over in five of them. Boston has gone under in four of six, after posting a 42-23 under record last season.

Both teams start fast defensively. Houston allows a league-low 48.7 first-half points per game, and Boston ranks 3rd at 51.3. The teams split last season's meetings, with each winning comfortably on the road: Houston 128-101 in Boston, the Celtics 114-93 in Houston.

Fred VanVleet is listed as a game-time decision with right knee injury management, though he may be available. Monitor him, Sheppard, Capela and Robinson before tip.
