Utah Jazz vs San Antonio Spurs prediction: Wembanyama gets another crack at Utah's stripped-down frontcourt

Five days after needing overtime to escape Salt Lake City, the Spurs host a 1-5 Jazz team missing two bigs, and a 16-point spread asks whether San Antonio can finally win the margin, not just the game.

Quick take
  • San Antonio should control the paint and the open floor, but its last two wins came by single digits or close to it against big spreads.
  • Victor Wembanyama against a Jazz frontcourt without Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jusuf Nurkic. He scored 43 with 6 blocks Saturday.
  • Spurs -16 with a 231.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw it. San Antonio failed to cover -13.5 in the Oct. 28 meeting.

Wembanyama and the empty paint

Utah's frontcourt has been gutted in a week. Jaren Jackson Jr. tore the MCL in his right knee and is out six to eight weeks, and Jusuf Nurkic remains out with a foot injury. Jaxson Hayes was questionable with a shoulder issue before the Oct. 28 game, played, and carried no Monday designation that we could find. Mo Bamba's minutes have grown, and Kyle Filipowski is being asked to do more.

That is a thin wall in front of a player in this kind of form. Wembanyama put up 36 points and 14 rebounds in the overtime win in Salt Lake City, then followed it with 43 points and 6 blocks against Minnesota on Saturday. Mitch Johnson has called him the first option, and the Spurs have kept feeding him.

San Antonio already scores 55.7 points in the paint per game, 2nd in the league. Utah's block rate ranks 3rd of 30, but with Jackson out the Jazz have lost a key rim protector. Without him, the Jazz have fewer ways to make Wembanyama work for his touches.

Giveaways fuel the Spurs' break

The cleanest edge in this game may come before anyone reaches the half court. Utah coughs the ball up on 17.0% of its possessions, 25th in the league. San Antonio protects it about as well as anyone, with a turnover rate of 13.1% that ranks 2nd.

Those extra possessions turn into runouts. The Spurs score 20.0 fast-break points per game, 2nd in the league, while the Jazz manage just 8.7, dead last. Both teams play at a similar tempo, so the difference isn't speed. It's that San Antonio gets easy baskets and Utah doesn't. A sloppy night from the Jazz backcourt is the quickest way this spread gets covered.

Utah's offense has gone cold

The Jazz are scoring 104.4 points per 100 possessions, 26th of 30. Saturday's 112-90 home loss to Portland was the low point: Utah trailed by 17 at halftime and never threatened.

This is also a reshuffled roster. Only 63.4% of last season's minutes return, and the starting group is still in flux, with Lauri Markkanen back from a wrist sprain to play 29 minutes at Portland and rookie Darryn Peterson, the No. 2 pick, already logging heavy minutes. Keyonte George is the constant. He averaged 23.6 points last season, and Utah needs that kind of volume to keep pace with a Spurs team that returns nearly its entire rotation.

San Antonio has its own absences. Tobias Harris is out with a calf strain and has yet to debut, and Jayden Quaintance remains out after knee surgery. De'Aaron Fox was questionable with a wrist issue on Oct. 23 but is not on the Nov. 2 injury lists.

Sixteen is a big number

The Spurs are 16-point favorites with a total of 231.5, and neither has moved since our feed first recorded them Monday morning. Eleven books are quoting the game.

The last meeting is the caution flag. San Antonio closed at -13.5 in Utah on Oct. 28 and won 117-111 in overtime, after trailing 55-51 at the half. The Spurs have also failed to cover their last two games, and they sit 2-4 against the spread overall. Utah is 1-5 against the number, with that Oct. 28 game its only cover.

On the total, both teams have gone under in four of six games. Utah has scored 90 and 111 in its last two, and the Jazz offense is the piece that has to show up for this one to climb.
