Atlanta Hawks vs Indiana Pacers prediction: With Siakam resting, Atlanta's ball pressure faces a skeleton Pacers roster

Indiana is on the second night of a back-to-back and down most of its rotation, and the spread has nearly doubled since morning.

Quick take
  • Atlanta should control possessions against a short-handed Indiana roster, though the Hawks' cold shooting keeps a blowout from being automatic.
  • Atlanta's turnover-forcing guards against whatever ball handlers Indiana has left without Haliburton, Nembhard and McConnell.
  • The Hawks moved from 5-point to 9.5-point favorites; Indiana is 0-3 at home this season.

An Indiana lineup in pieces

Monday's injury report reads like a Pacers depth chart. Tyrese Haliburton (hamstring), Ivica Zubac (ankle), T.J. McConnell (hamstring) and Andrew Nembhard (neck) are all out. Pascal Siakam, who averaged 24.0 points last season, and Aaron Nesmith are both being rested on the second night of a back-to-back. Larry Nance Jr. is doubtful with an illness. Obi Toppin's status is unsettled: he is listed as questionable with back soreness, but at least one listing has him out.

That leaves a team already in a slide. Indiana is 2-5, has lost four straight and is 0-3 at home. Sunday's loss was the low point, a 98-90 home defeat to a Nets team that had not won a game. Expect heavy minutes for Jarace Walker, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Jay Huff, plus two-way players pressed into duty.

Atlanta's hands in the passing lanes

The Hawks' clearest edge is the turnover battle. Atlanta forces turnovers on 18.3% of opponent possessions, 2nd in the league, and Dyson Daniels averaged 2.0 steals last season. Indiana's turnover rate of 14.8% ranks 10th, respectable with its regular guards. Without its top three playmakers, that number is hard to trust.

Turnovers feed Atlanta's open-floor game. The Hawks average 17.6 fast-break points, 7th in the league, and a tired Pacers group on short rest is the kind of opponent that gives up runs in the third quarter.

The paint is open both ways

Atlanta lives inside. The Hawks score 54.6 points in the paint per game, 3rd in the league, and Indiana no longer has Zubac to stop that. Huff, who blocked 1.9 shots per game last season, becomes the main deterrent.

The Hawks' own interior defense is the reason this may not get out of hand. Opponents are shooting 58.9% on twos against Atlanta, 28th of 30, and scoring 53.7 paint points a game, 27th. Jock Landale is out with a hip strain, so the Hawks are thin up front too. If Indiana can attack the rim, it can keep pace.

Cold jumpers and a questionable star

Atlanta's shooting has not traveled from last season. The Hawks hit 32.8% from three, 22nd in the league, and went 8-of-46 in Saturday's 121-99 loss at New Orleans, where they were 5.5-point favorites. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, a 39.9% shooter last season, is the most likely to turn that around.

Jalen Johnson left that game with an ankle injury and is questionable. He averaged 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists last season. Rookie Kingston Flemings is also out, serving a one-game league suspension for elbowing Bryce McGowens in the head. If Johnson sits, Atlanta's creation falls heavily on Alexander-Walker and Daniels.

A line that ran away

Our feed first saw Atlanta as 5-point favorites. The Hawks are now -9.5, a move driven by the wave of Pacers absences. The total has slipped from 232.5 to 230, a sign the market expects a lower-quality Indiana offense rather than a shootout.

Both teams are 3-4 against the spread. Atlanta has won two of three meetings last season, but this Pacers lineup looks little like any it has faced.

  • Whether Johnson plays, and his minutes if he does
  • Atlanta's three-point volume after Saturday's 8-of-46 night
  • Indiana's turnover count with backups running the offense
