Sacramento Kings vs Dallas Mavericks prediction: Dallas finishers line up against a Kings interior missing its bigs

Winless Sacramento owns the league's worst paint defense, and it arrives without Maxime Raynaud or Keegan Murray against a Dallas offense that converts nearly everything inside.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Dallas should live in the paint against an undermanned Kings frontcourt, while Sacramento's pace and hot-handed rookie keep the scoreboard moving.
  • Darius Acuff Jr. against a Dallas perimeter defense holding opponents to 29.7% from three, 2nd in the league.
  • Dallas -8.5 and a 232.0 total; the line has moved from -10.5 to -8.5 toward Sacramento and the total from 234.5 to 232.0 since our feed first saw them; Kings games are 5-1 to the over.

No resistance at the rim

Six games in, Sacramento is 0-6 and the defense is the reason. Opponents are making 61.6% of their twos against the Kings, worst of 30 teams, and scoring 59.3 points per game in the paint, also last. The Kings block shots at the lowest rate in the league, 4.6% of opponent two-point tries.

The bodies who might fix that are in street clothes. Maxime Raynaud, the 7-foot-1 center who started 56 games last season, is out with a dislocated right knee and isn't expected back before Nov. 10. Keegan Murray is out with an ankle injury, and Dylan Cardwell is questionable with a calf strain. That has pushed bigger roles onto Precious Achiuwa and Jonathan Mogbo.

Dallas is built to exploit exactly this. The Mavericks hit 60.2% of their twos, 2nd in the league, and their effective field goal percentage (which counts threes as 1.5 makes) of 56.9% also ranks 2nd. Opponents are posting a 60.4% effective mark against Sacramento, dead last. If Dallas simply takes what the Kings give, the possessions should resolve in its favor.

Kyrie's knee sets the ceiling

The biggest unknown is on the Dallas side. Kyrie Irving is questionable with left knee management and was still undecided on game day. The Mavericks have handled his knee carefully since opening night, and he sat the Oct. 24 loss to San Antonio, the second night of a back-to-back.

The case for him playing: he logged 35 minutes in Friday's 116-111 win over Houston, scoring a game-high 35 with nine assists, and Dallas then had 73 hours off. There is extra weight here too, because Irving tore his ACL against Sacramento in March 2025.

The frontcourt is thinner. Santi Aldama is doubtful as he works back from knee surgery. Dereck Lively II was listed out on the Nov. 1 report, though a game-day listing called him a game-time decision, so his status is unsettled. Without Lively, more falls to P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford. Cooper Flagg, who averaged 21.0 points last season, gives new coach Dusty May a second creator if Irving sits.

Acuff's range meets a stingy arc

Sacramento's offense has become rookie Darius Acuff Jr.'s show. The No. 7 pick scored a career-high 38 on 9-of-14 threes in Saturday's 136-105 loss at Memphis. As a team, though, the Kings shoot 30.4% from deep, 27th, and their offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions) of 103.2 ranks 28th.

Dallas has been excellent at running teams off the line, limiting opponents to 29.7% from three. That makes Acuff's volume the swing factor for the Kings' scoring.

He may have less help. Zach LaVine, who averaged 19.2 points for Sacramento last season, is questionable after leaving the Memphis game with right elbow soreness after 21 minutes. Malik Monk, a 39.5% three-point shooter last season, becomes even more important if LaVine can't go.

Tempo, totals and a rare favorite role

Tempo, totals and a rare favorite role The Kings play fast, with a pace of 106.0 possessions per game, 6th in the league, against a Dallas team sitting 18th. Sacramento's games have run high because its defense gives up 128.3 points per game, 29th, and 66.0 in first halves. All five of its most recent games went over, and Kings games are 5-1 to the over this season. Dallas has gone the other way, 2-4 on overs.

The market makes Dallas an 8.5-point favorite with a 232.0 total. Both have moved since our feed first recorded them: the spread has come in from 10.5 to 8.5, toward Sacramento, and the total has dropped from 234.5 to 232.0. That role is new for these Mavericks: they were the underdog in each of their last five games and covered four, including a 120-96 rout of Oklahoma City. Sacramento is 1-5 against the spread.

Last season's meetings offer little guidance. Sacramento won two of three, but both rosters have turned over, with each team returning under 60% of last season's minutes.

What to watch

  • Irving's pregame status and minutes.
  • Dallas paint touches against Achiuwa and Mogbo.
  • Whether Acuff keeps firing from deep against an elite arc defense.
  • LaVine's elbow and his availability.
