Portland Trail Blazers vs Denver Nuggets prediction: Blazers bring the league's most three-happy offense to Denver, minus Morant

Portland has been the better team through five games, but without Ja Morant it has to prove its shooting and defense travel against a Nuggets group still finding itself at home.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Portland's shooting and defensive rebounding against a Denver defense that has struggled; the Nuggets need Jokic and their own shooters to keep pace.
  • Portland's league-high three-point volume against a Nuggets defense ranked 21st in points allowed per 100 possessions.
  • Denver is a 4-point favorite with a 231.5 total, both unchanged; Portland is 3-0 on the road this season.

Portland's shooting test

Through five games the Trail Blazers have looked like a different team from last season's 42-40 group, and the bettor's question is whether a hot October survives a trip to altitude without their new point guard. Portland takes 51.5% of its shots from three, the highest share in the league, and its offense scores 116.5 points per 100 possessions, 4th of 30.

The twist is where the efficiency actually comes from. Portland makes only 35.3% of its threes, 12th in the league, but hits 59.7% of its twos, 3rd. That matters against a Denver defense that has allowed 55.4% on twos, 22nd, and has been soft in the paint generally. The Nuggets allow 112.9 points per 100 possessions, 21st, so far. The floor spacing that comes with all those attempts is opening driving lanes, and Denver hasn't shown it can close them.

Life without Morant

Ja Morant suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain in Thursday's loss to Memphis and is expected to miss about four weeks. Shaedon Sharpe remains out after meniscus surgery. Morant's absence pushes more of the ball to Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson, and the early returns were fine: Portland won 112-90 at Utah on Saturday in its first game without him.

Deni Avdija is the engine. He averaged 24.2 points and 6.7 assists last season. Robert Williams III, who had been dealing with left knee soreness, played at Utah and is not on Monday's injury report, which keeps Portland's frontcourt depth intact behind Donovan Clingan.

The free throw standoff

Portland lives at the line, with a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 35.9%, 3rd in the league. Denver has been the league's best team at keeping opponents off the line, allowing a 21.5% rate, 1st of 30.

Even when Portland gets there, the payoff is shaky. The Blazers make 73.1% of their free throws, 27th, so a whistle-heavy game is not the automatic edge for Portland it looks like from the attempt numbers alone.

Jokic and the glass

Denver's path runs through Nikola Jokic, who averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists last season, and through a shooting group that still bites: the Nuggets hit 37.4% of their threes, 7th in the league. Jamal Murray shot 43.5% from deep last season, and Cameron Johnson, who played 34 minutes Friday at Phoenix, isn't on Monday's injury report.

The rebounding matchup leans Portland. The Blazers grab 77.3% of available defensive rebounds, 3rd, while Denver ranks 23rd on its own defensive glass. If Clingan holds his ground against Jokic and Portland's misses become second chances, the Nuggets' half-court defense gets stretched even thinner.

Denver is also missing depth. Spencer Jones (hamstring) and Julian Strawther (knee) are out, and Alpha Diallo's status is unsettled: listed questionable Sunday and day-to-day Monday. The Nuggets brought back only 61.1% of last season's minutes, and newcomer DeMar DeRozan averaged 18.4 points for Sacramento last season.

Where the line sits

Denver is a 4-point favorite at home and the line hasn't moved since our feed first recorded it, with the total steady at 231.5. The market is pricing in Denver's pedigree and Portland's missing guard more than this season's numbers, which have the Blazers 3rd in net efficiency and Denver 19th.

History supports the Nuggets. They won the last three meetings last season, including a 157-103 rout in Portland in February. But Portland is 3-2 against the spread and 3-0 on the road, while Denver has split its two home games, including a 134-114 loss to Golden State, with the Nuggets scoring 114.
