Detroit Pistons vs Charlotte Hornets prediction: Coby White returns as Charlotte's stalled offense faces Detroit's wall
The Hornets get their new guard back just as Kon Knueppel sits, and the NBA's top defense is waiting for a lineup that can't find the basket.
| Spread | Detroit Pistons -6 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 210 |
- Expect a slow, grinding game: Detroit ranks 29th in pace, Charlotte 30th, and the Hornets have the league's worst offense.
- Charlotte's three-heavy attack against Detroit's perimeter defense. The Hornets shoot often from deep but make just 29.6%.
- Detroit is favored by 4.5 with a 211 total, unchanged all day. Charlotte's games are 1-6 to the under.
Charlotte's offense hits a wall
Five days ago these teams played in Detroit, and the Hornets scored 89 points. Now they face the same defense without Kon Knueppel, the rookie who made 42.5% of his threes last season. Coby White is cleared and expected to make his season debut, which helps. It does not solve everything.
The Hornets rank 30th of 30 in offensive efficiency at 100.0 points per 100 possessions. Their effective field goal percentage, which counts threes at 1.5 times, sits 29th. The problem is the three. Charlotte takes threes on 50.8% of its shots, second-most in the league, and makes only 29.6% of them, 28th. Last season this roster's predecessor shot 37.8% from deep, third in the league, but only 60.8% of last season's minutes are back, and LaMelo Ball is now in Minnesota.
Detroit is the wrong opponent for a slump. The Pistons allow 101.0 points per 100 possessions, best in the NBA, and opponents shoot 32.5% from three against them. Inside is no escape: Detroit ranks first in opponent two-point percentage and first in block rate. Charlotte's paint scoring already ranks 29th.
Who's missing on both sides
Charlotte is without Knueppel and Grant Williams, both with hamstring injuries, and Kylan Boswell (knee) is also out. White's return moves Dennis Schröder to the bench after Schröder shot 1-for-11 for four points in the 109-104 home loss to Philadelphia. That defeat extended a three-game losing streak that followed a 3-1 start. White arrives on a three-year, $95 million deal, so the Hornets need him to supply the shot creation that has disappeared.
Detroit is still missing Jalen Duren, who averaged 19.5 points last season and has a hamstring strain with an estimated return of Nov. 9. Paul Reed has handled center minutes. Isaiah Joe's status is unsettled: the league report lists him as out with a hip bruise, while other Nov. 1 updates call him questionable. If he sits, Kevin Huerter and Ron Holland II should pick up the wing minutes. Ausar Thompson returned from an ankle sprain in the Oct. 27 loss at New York and played 25 minutes; no newer update has surfaced.
Possessions decide the margin
Charlotte's best path is the offensive glass. The Hornets rebound 31.6% of their misses, 4th in the league, and with Duren out Detroit's 15th-ranked defensive rebounding is more exposed. Those extra chances matter for a team that misses so often.
The Hornets give those possessions right back. Their turnover rate of 18.9 per 100 possessions ranks 29th, and Detroit forces turnovers at the 7th-highest rate. Charlotte also ranks last in free throw rate, so it rarely gets cheap points to break a drought. The Pistons' own offense is ordinary, 18th in efficiency while it adjusts to a new system, but Cade Cunningham's 30 points carried them in the Oct. 28 meeting.
What the market is pricing
Detroit is a 4.5-point favorite, about -180 on the moneyline, and neither the spread nor the 211 total has moved since our feed first saw the game. The Pistons are 5-1 against the spread; the Hornets are 3-4.
The total is where the season's evidence points one direction. Charlotte's games have gone under six times in seven, Detroit's four in six, and the last meeting closed at 212.5 and finished well under it, 97-89. The rivalry has been one-sided: Detroit has won the last five meetings, including last season's game that ended in a brawl and four suspensions. White's debut is the variable the market has the least data on.
