Jonny Parsons vs Jose Souza prediction: Jonny Parsons returns from 1,204 days away to face a long Brazilian

The Sluggernaut's power was real in his only UFC fight, but rust and a reach gap stand between him and José Souza's jab.

Quick take
  • A striking fight at range: Souza tries to work behind his length, while Parsons hunts the exchanges where his power changed his UFC debut.
  • Watch whether Parsons can close distance. Watch whether Parsons can close distance. 99% of Souza's landed strikes came at distance in his UFC debut, and he barely touched the clinch.
  • No US sportsbook price yet. The number that matters most is Parsons' 1,204 days since his last fight.

The long road back

Jonny Parsons last fought in July 2023, when he stopped Danny Roberts with punches at 4:57 of the second round. When he walks out at the Meta APEX this Saturday, 1,204 days will have passed since that night. No reason for the layoff has come out. It follows an earlier setback, when he had to pull out of a planned UFC debut in early 2022.

He is 35 and has only one UFC fight to show for a long stretch with the promotion. He is still weighing whether to show his technical side or keep trading. Rust is the main question in this fight. Parsons has tried to turn the layoff talk around, pointing to José Souza's own history of stops and starts and saying, "I wouldn't be surprised if that happened on Nov. 7."

Reach against the slugger

Both men have one UFC fight each, so every rate here rests on 25 combined minutes at most. Still, the styles are clear. Parsons landed 63 significant strikes against Roberts and scored two knockdowns. He is 9-3 as a pro with seven wins by knockout, and the nickname fits.

Souza brings the frame. He stands 6-foot-3 with a 79-inch reach, while Parsons is 5-foot-9 with a 69-inch reach. In his one UFC fight, 99% of his landed significant strikes came at distance, with 85% of them aimed at the head. That is a fighter who wants space, and Parsons, who did 81% of his damage at distance, will need to step into range without walking onto that jab.

Defense could matter just as much. Parsons made opponents miss 67% of their strikes, Souza 57%. Souza absorbed 63 significant strikes in his one UFC fight, which gives a heavy-handed puncher openings.

Two thin résumés

Souza is 9-1 as a pro, and his one loss was a third-round knockout against Yusaku Kinoshita on Dana White's Contender Series in 2022. The UFC signed him in 2023, but a failed out-of-competition drug test brought a two-year suspension. Two planned debut bouts then fell through before he finally won a split decision over Ding Meng in May. Ding was making his own debut and is now 0-2 in the UFC.

That decision is Souza's only UFC win, and the analysis around him is cautious about his ceiling. He is the more active fighter, with 161 days since his last bout. Neither man has ever attempted a takedown in the UFC, so expect this to stay on the feet for as long as it lasts.
