Gabriel Lorenco vs Thomas Petersen prediction: Gabriel Lorenço's power debut faces a late-notice Petersen takedown test

A Contender Series knockout artist makes his UFC debut against a short-notice veteran whose best nights come from takedowns and top control, and whose worst come from punches at distance.

Quick take
  • Petersen needs takedowns early. If Lorenço stays upright, his power gets chances against a man knocked out twice in the UFC.
  • Watch Petersen's first shot. Lorenço stuffed a takedown before the elbow that finished Charlie Cleveland at 2:02.
  • No US sportsbook price has posted yet. When one does, weigh Petersen's two UFC knockout losses against his 2.59 takedowns per 15 minutes.

A debut built on knockouts

Gabriel Lorenço arrives with the kind of resume that gets a Contender Series contract fast. He is 8-1 as a pro on an eight-fight win streak, with six of those wins by knockout and one by submission. He earned his spot on Dana White's Contender Series in September, stopping Charlie Cleveland in the first round after stuffing a takedown and landing an elbow.

That sequence is the whole preview in miniature. Lorenço, 27, has the aggressive, power-first style that wins highlight reels, and he has already shown he can deny a wrestler's entry and punish it. He also started his career at middleweight before settling at heavyweight. His one pro loss came by knockout, so he has been hurt before.

Petersen wins on the mat

Thomas Petersen took this fight on very short notice after Alvin Hines withdrew with vertigo. He is 3-4 in the UFC and 11-5 as a pro, a former LFA heavyweight champion who has alternated wins and losses across his UFC run.

His three UFC wins all went to decision, and the formula is plain. Against Don'Tale Mayes he went 9 for 9 on takedowns. Against Guilherme Pat in April he banked 516 seconds of control and scored a knockdown on the way to a majority decision. Over his UFC career he lands 2.59 takedowns per 15 minutes and controls opponents for 39% of fight time. He also stops 86% of opponents' takedown attempts, so he usually decides where the fight happens.

On the feet he is efficient but not busy, landing 2.99 significant strikes a minute while absorbing 2.58. That is a workable rate for a grinder, not for a man trying to outpoint a knockout puncher at range.

Where Petersen breaks

The losses tell the other half. Shamil Gaziev stopped him with a punch at distance in the first round. Vitor Petrino did the same 26 seconds into the third after Petersen went 0 for 8 on takedowns. Most recently, in July, Valter Walker caught him in a calf slicer at 1:32 of the first.

That Petrino fight is the warning for this one. When Petersen's shots stop landing, he is left standing in front of a bigger hitter, and his opponents' strikes miss only 56% of the time. Lorenço holds a small edge in height and reach, 74 inches to 73 in height and 76 to 74 in reach, and the orthodox-versus-southpaw matchup adds an angle Petersen will have to manage on his entries.

Petersen's job is to close distance, chain attempts and make a short-notice camp irrelevant by keeping the fight on the mat. Lorenço's job is to make that first takedown cost something, the way he did against Cleveland. Over three rounds, the longer Lorenço stays upright, the more this tilts toward the debutant.
