Billy Elekana vs Lucas Fernando prediction: Lucas Fernando's long-range damage puts Billy Elekana's choke game on the clock

Fernando landed at a blistering clip in one UFC appearance, so Elekana has to turn a striking deficit into a scramble before the damage piles up.

The moneyline
Billy Elekana+245 (27.6% implied)
Lucas Fernando-315 (72.4% implied)

Median of US sportsbooks; implied chances have the books' margin removed. Updated Nov 3, 3:06 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Fernando wants a long-range fight built on volume and body work; Elekana needs a scramble, a takedown or a hurt opponent to reach the back.
  • Watch the first time Elekana shoots or clinches: his takedowns land at 22%, and Fernando has spent almost no time grappling in the UFC.
  • Fernando is -315 (72.4% implied), firmer than the -255 first seen, backed by his 6.18 strikes landed per minute.

The striking gap

This light heavyweight bout on Saturday's main card at the Meta APEX comes down to how long it stays standing. Lucas Fernando arrived in August and gave Rafael Tobias a beating for most of 10 minutes before a knee to the body ended it early in the third round. He landed 69 significant strikes and absorbed 13, scoring two knockdowns along the way.

That one fight is all the UFC data there is on him, so his career rates sit on just 11.2 minutes. Still, the profile fits his record. Fernando is 14-3 as a pro with eight wins by knockout, and he arrives on five straight wins as a former LFA champion. He spreads his work around too: 26% of his landed strikes go to the body and 20% to the legs, the kind of mix that slows an opponent before the head shots arrive.

Billy Elekana has not shown the defense to win that exchange. He lands 2.71 significant strikes a minute and absorbs 3.59, so he has taken more than he has given across four UFC fights. Against Junior Tafa in January he was out-landed 38 to 24 before he found the choke.

Elekana's route to the back

Elekana is 3-1 in the UFC and 10-2 as a pro, and the three wins have a pattern. He survives the striking, waits for a moment, and then takes the back. Kevin Christian went down from a sweeping right hand and was choked out in the first round. Tafa was submitted by rear-naked choke in the second after Elekana landed 1 of 5 takedown attempts.

That is the problem. His takedowns land at 22%, so he usually has to manufacture a scramble or hurt someone first. The southpaw needs his right hand to open the door, because chasing a single leg against a fighter who stays at distance for 96% of his output could mean eating knees on the way in.

There is a warning sign on the mat as well. In his UFC debut, on short notice, Bogdan Guskov caught him in a guillotine in the second round while Elekana absorbed 47 significant strikes. Elekana has never been stopped by strikes in the UFC, but he has never faced someone hitting at Fernando's rate.

What the market is saying

Books have moved toward the Brazilian since our feed first saw the bout. Fernando sits at -315 across eight books, up from -255 when our feed first saw the bout, and Elekana has drifted out to +245 from +212.

The case for Elekana at that price is mostly about what nobody has seen. Fernando has not been tested on the ground in the UFC, and his control and grappling numbers barely register. Elekana also brings the more seasoned UFC résumé, with three wins in a row since that debut loss. He has been out 280 days, though, while Fernando is back after 84. Both men are trying to break into the division's rankings, and this is the cleanest chance either has had.
