Austin Bashi vs Lucas Brennan prediction: Austin Bashi loses his opponent, keeps his takedown finishing problem

Lucas Brennan's torn ACL leaves Bashi waiting on a replacement, and whoever steps in faces a wrestler who shoots constantly but converts rarely.

Quick take
  • Brennan is out with a torn ACL and no replacement is named. Expect Bashi to chase takedowns early against whoever accepts the bout.
  • Watch Bashi's shot conversion. He landed 3 of 14 takedowns against Jose Delgado and lost a decision on the feet.
  • No US sportsbook price exists yet. The number that matters most once one appears: Bashi lands just 21% of his UFC takedown attempts.

The fight Bashi was promised is gone

Lucas Brennan will not make the walk. The Next Generation southpaw confirmed in an Instagram post in late October that a full-thickness ACL tear had ended his camp, and he said he hoped Bashi would get another opponent. He gave no surgery plan or return date.

The UFC is reportedly seeking a replacement at 145 pounds, but that report is unconfirmed and no name has surfaced. The promotion's event page was still showing the original pairing late last month, so treat the listing as stale. The card has been shuffled at the top too: Sean Brady withdrew with a staph infection in his left knee, and Waldo Cortes-Acosta against Johnny Walker now headlines over five rounds.

Brennan, 11-3 as a pro and 0-1 in the UFC, lost his debut to Francis Marshall. Francis Marshall outlanded him 33 to 9 in significant strikes on the way to a clean decision. That rebuild now waits.

A wrestler who can't finish shots

Whoever replaces Brennan will be preparing for one thing: takedown attempts, and lots of them. Bashi averages 3.12 takedowns per 15 minutes in the UFC, but he lands only 21% of his attempts. Both of his UFC losses followed the same script. He went 3 of 18 on takedowns against Christian Rodriguez and 3 of 14 against Delgado, and the judges sent him home both nights.

The effort isn't wasted entirely. He banked 341 seconds of control against Rodriguez, and he controls opponents for 35% of his UFC fight time. But failed shots cost energy and rounds, and three UFC fights totaling 33.6 minutes is a small base for any of these rates.

When he does get on top, he is dangerous. Bashi is 6-0 by submission as a pro, and his lone UFC win came by rear-naked choke in the first round against John Yannis, a sequence that started with a hook, then a single-leg, then the back and a body triangle.

The problem on the feet

Bashi's striking has not kept him safe when the wrestling stalls. He lands 1.69 significant strikes a minute and absorbs 2.35, and his 54% striking defense means nearly half of what opponents throw finds him. Delgado, a switch-stance striker who lands 7.72 a minute, kept the fight standing and swept the cards.

The 25-year-old is also short for the division at 5 feet 6 with a 70-inch reach. A late replacement with length and decent takedown defense could rerun the Delgado fight. One who struggles off his back is in real trouble.

Until a name is announced, this is a preview of Bashi alone: a grappler with finishing upside and a shot selection that has cost him twice.
