Austin Bashi vs Carlos Calderon prediction: Austin Bashi's contract fight hinges on finally finishing his takedowns
A Fury FC champion with a submission-heavy résumé takes the fight on four days' notice, and Bashi's job may depend on whether his shots finally land.
| Austin Bashi | -662.5 (83.1% implied) |
|---|---|
| Carlos Calderon | +467.5 (16.9% implied) |
- Bashi likely chains takedown attempts from the opening bell; Calderon's length and scrambling decide whether those shots become control or wasted energy.
- Watch Bashi's entries against the cage: he lands 21% of his takedown attempts, and failed shots open the door to Calderon's guillotines and scrambles.
- Bashi is -625 (82.6% implied), moving from a first-seen -452.5, despite a 1-2 UFC record built on two decision losses.
A contract fight on four days' notice
Austin Bashi arrived in the UFC unbeaten and has spent the time since learning how thin the margins are. He is 1-2 in the Octagon, both losses on the scorecards, and Saturday's bout at Meta APEX is the last fight on his current deal. A third loss in four appearances could put his roster spot in jeopardy.
His opponent took the call on four days' notice. Carlos Calderon, the Fury FC featherweight champion, replaces Lucas Brennan, who withdrew with a torn ACL. Calderon is 11-4 as a pro, rides a three-fight winning streak and defended his title in October with a five-round decision over Lorram Esteves. "God makes no mistakes in his timing," he wrote on Instagram. Both men made weight on Friday, each at 145.5 pounds.
The takedown math
Bashi's identity is the shot. He averages 3.12 takedowns per 15 minutes, but he lands only 21% of his attempts, and that inefficiency shaped both of his losses. Against Christian Rodriguez he needed 18 attempts to land three. Against Jose Delgado he landed three from 14 tries, and one judge gave him nothing at 27-30.
When he does get there, he holds position: control accounts for 35% of his UFC fight time. The cost shows on the feet, where he lands 1.69 significant strikes a minute and absorbs 2.35. Those rates rest on just 33.6 minutes of cage time, but they describe a fighter who has not yet found a way to win the standing exchanges at this level.
Calderon brings a frame that complicates the shot. He is a 5'11" southpaw against Bashi's 5'6" orthodox build, and the longer man can make every level change travel farther.
Where the submissions live
This is a grappler's fight from both sides. Calderon owns eight finishes among his 11 pro wins, and six of those came by submission. The flip side: two of his four pro losses also came by submission, including a second-round tap against Alberto Montes on the Contender Series in October 2024.
Bashi has his own finishing touch. Six of his 14 pro wins came by submission, and his only UFC win was a rear-naked choke of John Yannis at 3:39 of the first round. If his shots turn into scrambles, the question becomes who finds the back or the neck first.
The unknowable is Calderon's tank. He went five rounds in October, then accepted a UFC debut with four days to prepare. A three-round fight against a man who shoots relentlessly tests conditioning as much as technique.
What the market sees
The books have little doubt. Bashi sits at -625 across seven books, an 82.6% no-vig chance, and the money has moved his way since our feed first saw him at -452.5. Calderon is +450.
That price trusts Bashi's wrestling volume and Calderon's short camp more than Bashi's UFC results. A fighter who has gone 1-2 with two decision losses is being priced like a heavy favorite, which puts real weight on whether those takedowns finally convert.
