St Louis Blues vs Nashville Predators prediction: Nashville's elite special teams test a disciplined Blues side

The Predators carry a top-five power play and a top-three penalty kill into a near-even matchup, and the Blues rarely give them a chance to use either.

Quick take
  • Two low-shot teams, tight margins, and a game likely swung by one power play or one save.
  • Nashville's power play (29.6%, 5th) against a Blues team that is shorthanded just 2.62 times a game, 3rd-fewest in the league.
  • The Blues are the slimmest of moneyline favorites at -110 against Nashville's -109; Nashville is 11-5 on the puck line this season.

Where Nashville holds the edge

Nashville's season looks ordinary at even strength, but its special teams are anything but. The Predators convert 29.6% of their power plays (power-play goals per opportunity), 5th in the league, and kill off 90.0% of opponents' chances, 3rd of 32.

St. Louis has a counter: it simply doesn't take many penalties. The Blues are shorthanded 2.62 times per game, 3rd-fewest in the league. When they do sit someone, their penalty kill holds up at 85.7%, 6th overall. If the Blues keep the whistles quiet, they take away Nashville's sharpest weapon. If they don't, Roman Josi and Filip Forsberg are running a unit that has been punishing teams all season.

The Blues' own power play sits at 21.3%, 18th, and they draw few chances. Against that Nashville kill, St. Louis likely needs its goals at five-on-five.

Two goalies, one question

Neither team has confirmed a starter, and the previews disagree in places. Joel Hofer is the probable starter for St. Louis after Jordan Binnington started Thursday in New Jersey. The gap between them is stark: Hofer carries a .918 save percentage and a 2.39 goals-against average, while Binnington sits at .849.

Juuse Saros is expected to start for Nashville after Justus Annunen made 30 saves in Thursday's win at Colorado. Saros is 4-3-4 with a .908 save percentage. Nashville's team save percentage ranks 4th, so the goaltending behind a team that gets outshot has held. If the Blues turn back to Binnington instead, the picture shifts sharply in Nashville's favor. These are small samples, but the split is wide enough to matter.

Outshot, but finishing

Both teams spend a lot of time defending. Nashville's shot share (its share of all shots in its games) is 46.9%, 28th in the league, and the Blues are only modestly better at 48.6%. The Predators lean on blocked shots, ranking 3rd in blocks per game.

What Nashville lacks in volume, its centers make up in finishing. Steven Stamkos has 9 goals, including Thursday's overtime winner that stretched the win streak to three games. Ryan O'Reilly is converting 24.1% of his shots. For St. Louis, Jimmy Snuggerud leads with 8 goals on a 23.5% shooting rate, a pace that rarely holds, while Mason McTavish has 7 goals on a team-high 47 shots.

Who's in, who's out

The Blues got Colton Parayko back Thursday after a two-game upper-body absence. Logan Mailloux rejoined the team after an AHL conditioning stint but remains on injured reserve, so his status for Saturday is unclear. Torey Krug (ankle) is on long-term injured reserve, and Tyler Tucker and Dillon Dube are also on injured reserve.

For Nashville, Jonathan Marchessault remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury and missed Thursday's game, with no word on Saturday. Defenseman William Trudeau is on injured reserve.

This is the second of four meetings between the Central Division rivals, and the Predators have owned the recent ones, including a 5-2 home win on Oct. 17. St. Louis closes a four-game road trip here at 3-5-1 away from home.

A market split down the middle

Books see almost nothing between these teams. St. Louis is the nominal favorite at -110, with Nashville at -109, and the puck line has the Predators at +1.5. The total sits at 6.0 and hasn't moved since our feed first saw the game.

The puck line history leans one way: Nashville is 11-5 against it this season, helped by a run of underdog wins. The Blues are 9-7 to the over, while Nashville has split its totals evenly, so neither team's history argues strongly on the 6.0.
