Vancouver Canucks vs Edmonton Oilers prediction: Oilers' elite power play faces Vancouver's collapsing penalty kill

The Canucks have lost four straight and can't kill penalties, and Edmonton's only real question is who stands in its crease.

Quick take
  • Edmonton should control play if Vancouver keeps taking penalties. The Canucks' best hope is their finishing, which ranks 5th in the league.
  • Watch Edmonton's crease: Tristan Jarry is the probable starter but is day-to-day with an illness after missing Thursday's game.
  • The Oilers are -360 favorites, and the total has climbed to 7.0. Vancouver allows 4.61 goals per game, last in the NHL.

A kill that can't hold

Vancouver arrives in Edmonton on a four-game losing streak with the worst defensive numbers in hockey, and the Oilers own the weapon best built to exploit them. The question is less whether Edmonton scores than how fast, and whether a shaky goaltending picture in Edmonton gives the Canucks a way back in.

Edmonton's power play converts 33.9% of its chances (power-play goals per opportunity), 3rd of 32. Vancouver's penalty kill, the share of opponent power plays it survives, sits at 63.3%, 31st. The Oilers also draw 3.65 power plays per game, 3rd in the league. Every Canucks trip to the box is a real threat to the scoreboard.

The other direction offers Vancouver a sliver. Edmonton's kill ranks 23rd, so a disciplined night from the Canucks could turn special teams into their best path to a goal or two.

Crease questions on both ends

The Oilers haven't confirmed a starter. Jarry is listed as the probable starter but is day-to-day with an illness; he missed Thursday because he was sick, not injured. His .903 save percentage this season is the best number in Edmonton's crease.

Depth is thin behind him. Frederik Andersen is out with a knee injury, and Devon Levi remains on injured reserve. Matt Tomkins started Thursday and made 16 saves in the 5-4 loss to Anaheim, after winning his Nov. 1 debut with 27 saves against the Rangers.

Vancouver is expected to go back to Leevi Merilainen, who stopped 23 of 29 shots Thursday in Winnipeg for his third straight losing start. His .889 mark is the steadier of the Canucks' two options, and the team's overall save percentage ranks last in the league. Thatcher Demko is on injured reserve after hip surgery; in late September the club said it hoped he would return before Christmas.

Shots, stars and a tilted ice

Vancouver ranks last in both shots per game and shots allowed, leaving it with a 41.2% shot share (its share of all shots in its games). Teams that get outshot that badly need their goalie to steal games, and that hasn't happened.

Edmonton doesn't need volume. The Oilers lead the NHL in shooting percentage and in goals at 4.12 per game. Connor McDavid has 44 points in 17 games, and Leon Draisaitl has 14 goals. Evan Bouchard adds a third elite scorer from the blue line.

Elias Pettersson carries Vancouver's attack with 18 points, a point per game. The Canucks will likely be without Filip Chytil, who was not scheduled to join this road trip, and Tom Willander's lower-body status for tonight is unsettled. For Edmonton, Zach Hyman is still listed as out with a neck injury.

What the market expects

Books price Edmonton at -360 on the moneyline, with Vancouver at +285, and the Oilers at -1.5 on the puck line. The total was 6.75 when our feed first saw the game and now sits at 7.0, a nod to two defenses that have given up plenty lately: both teams went over in their last two games.

Starts matter here. Edmonton allows 0.47 first-period goals per game, best in the league, while Vancouver gives up 1.5, worst. The Oilers' home form is the one soft spot, with four wins in nine games at Rogers Place.

The two clubs already traded wild results this fall, a 6-5 Canucks win in Edmonton and a 9-7 Oilers win in Vancouver.
