Washington College (MD) vs Loyola Maryland prediction: Loyola Maryland opens a rebuilt backcourt against Division III Washington College
The Greyhounds return less than a third of last season's minutes, so a home date with a Division III team facing a coaching change is a first look at who replaces two departed scorers.
- Loyola should control this from the start. The real interest is which new and returning guards take the shots Braeden Speed and Emmett Adair left behind.
- Troy Cicero Jr.'s shooting against a Washington College roster adjusting to new leadership after Corey Begly's exit.
- No spread or total has posted. The last meeting, a Nov. 2025 exhibition in Baltimore, ended 51-101 against the Shoremen.
A roster starting over
Loyola Maryland went 12-20 last season and finished 325th of 365 in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). That number describes a team that is largely gone. Players on this season's roster accounted for just 31.9% of last season's minutes.
The two biggest holes are scoring holes. Braeden Speed, who averaged 15.3 points, left for Florida Atlantic. Emmett Adair, who averaged 14.6, is now at George Mason. Bucknell ended last season with a 76-72 overtime win in the Patriot League quarterfinals, and Josh Loeffler, entering his third season, now has to rebuild the rotation around bench pieces and transfers.
Who takes the shots
Last season's Greyhounds were built on volume from deep. Their 3-point attempt rate of 47.0% ranked 32nd nationally. The likeliest heir to that role is Troy Cicero Jr., who made 38% of his threes on 121 attempts off the bench last season.
Wofford transfer Maximo Ortega shot 41.2% from three in limited minutes there. Sam Springer, who started 31 games last season, is the steadiest returning frontcourt presence. A Division III opponent gives Loeffler room to see how these minutes sort out.
Washington College in transition
The Shoremen arrive with a new voice on the bench. Corey Begly announced in July that he was stepping down to take the Connecticut College job, closing a three-year run in which he went 22-53. Former Ursinus assistant Tom Primosch has been listed as his successor.
Washington College did open last season with nine straight wins, its best start since 1928, and won the Wild Goose Classic. The trip to Reitz Arena went differently. A Nov. 2025 exhibition at Loyola ended 51-101.
Key players
- Troy Cicero Jr. (Loyola Maryland): Shot 38% from three on 121 attempts last season with a 21.3% usage rate, the highest among the top returners.
- Sam Springer (Loyola Maryland): Started 31 of 32 games last season and shot 35.1% from three.
- Maximo Ortega (Loyola Maryland): Posted a 59 effective field goal percentage in 8.8 minutes a game at Wofford last season.
Numbers that matter
| Returning minutes | 31.9% | Loyola's share of last season's minutes still on the roster, so last season's team numbers are a weak guide. |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusted net rank, last season | 325th | Loyola's final ranking among 365 Division I teams last season. |
| 3-point attempt rate, last season | 47.0% | Ranked 32nd nationally, a style the new guards may or may not keep. |
| Last meeting | 51-101 | Washington College's exhibition loss at Loyola in Nov. 2025. |
