Florida Gulf Coast vs Georgia prediction: Georgia's fast break greets a Florida Gulf Coast roster starting over

Georgia opens its regular season at Stegeman Coliseum with its returning core intact, while FGCU arrives with almost none of last season's minutes back.

Quick take
  • Georgia should push the pace and lean on its returning shooters, while a largely new FGCU roster tries to hold up on defense.
  • Georgia's defensive rebounding, 346th last season, against FGCU's second-chance hopes is the clearest path to keeping this close.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. Last season's adjusted net ratings put Georgia 31st and FGCU 243rd.

A roster FGCU barely recognizes

Florida Gulf Coast's players this season logged only 19.4% of the program's minutes last season. That makes last season's 16-18 team a weak guide to what Pat Chambers brings to Athens. J.R. Konieczny, the leading scorer at 15.6 points per game, is gone. So is Jordan Ellerbee, now at Butler, along with point guard Rahmir Barno, now at UC San Diego.

The new focal point is likely Elijah Brooks, a Houston Christian transfer who averaged 12.2 points in eight games there with a heavy 27.8% usage rate. Darren Williams is the most experienced returner, a guard who hit 35.7% of his threes last season. Beyond that, FGCU is a group still learning each other's habits.

Georgia wants to run

Mike White's teams play fast. Georgia averaged 72.7 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 11th-most in Division I, and scored 89.4 points per game, fifth in the country. FGCU sat at the other end of the tempo spectrum, ranking 250th in pace.

Georgia can afford the speed because it protects the ball. Its turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) of 14.4 ranked 35th last season. If the Bulldogs dictate tempo on their home floor, a thin, unfamiliar FGCU rotation faces a long night of transition defense.

The rim and the glass

Georgia's defense blocked 14.7% of opponents' two-point tries last season, 12th nationally. The anchor of that, center Somto Cyril, left for Miami after averaging 2.2 blocks. Georgia replaced him by committee: St. Bonaventure transfer Andrew Osasuyi blocked 1.7 shots per game, and Ole Miss transfer James Scott shot 72.9% from the field.

The weak spot was the defensive glass. Georgia grabbed only 65.2% of opponents' misses, ranking 346th of 365. That is where FGCU's chances live. If the Eagles can turn misses into second shots, they can drag out possessions and shrink a talent gap that last season's adjusted net ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) put at 21.7 for Georgia against -7.1 for FGCU.

Shooters kept and added

Georgia returns 44.2% of last season's minutes, and the core is mostly shooters. Marcus "Smurf" Millender hit 38.9% from three. Kanon Catchings made 68 threes on 37.6% shooting. Saint Louis transfer Brady Dunlap adds a 45.1% stroke from deep. Blue Cain, the most efficient returner, made 90.7% of his free throws.

FGCU's defense last season gave up a lot from three. Opponents took 45.5% of their shots from deep, 26th-most in Division I, and made 35.1% of them. New personnel could change that, but Georgia's shooters will test it early.

A sour exhibition, a fresh start

Georgia's last outing stung. At Clemson on Oct. 23, the Bulldogs erased a seven-point deficit in the final 71 seconds, and Catchings tied it 80-80 with a three. Clemson then won 82-80 on a buzzer-beating putback.

The SEC preseason media poll projects Georgia 11th, and White has said he expects an NCAA Tournament return. Georgia lists no basketball injuries. FGCU has reported no availability news. This opener is the first real look at the rebuilt rotations for both teams.
